In the history of Christian interpretation, there are few figures like Hagar-Ishmael that bring about harmful and long-lasting hatred. However, contrary to the long-established interpretation of Hagar-Ishmael, Hagar-Ishmael cannot be the expulsion of Jews by Christianity, nor can it be a declaration of slavery, racial and gender discrimination, and Islamophobia. Therefore, reading Hagar-Ishmael in today’s multicultural situation should be an important case study to discover the potential of the Bible as a source of reconciliation, solidarity, and salvation with racial, religious, and socio-cultural ‘Others’. For this, this study performs an alternative reading that excavates the ‘pro-Other interpretations’ that resists discrimination and hatred against religion, race, class, and gender contained in the Hagar narrative, and establishes a ‘new image of Hagar-Ishmael’ based on the Bible in today’s multicultural society.

기독교 해석의 역사에서 하갈-이스마엘처럼 해롭고 오래 지속되는 혐 오를 불러오는 인물도 거의 없다. 그러나 이처럼 오랫동안 확립된 하갈- 이스마엘에 대한 해석과는 달리, 하갈-이스마엘은 기독교에 의한 유대인 의 추방도 아니고, 노예 제도와 인종과 성 차별, 그리고 이슬람혐오에 대한 확언도 될 수 없다. 따라서 지금의 다문화 상황에서 하갈-이스마엘을 읽 는 것은 인종적, 종교적, 그리고 사회문화적 ‘타자들’과의 화해와 연대, 그 리고 구원을 가져오는 원천으로서 성서의 잠재력을 발견하는 중요한 시범 사례가 되어야 할 것이다. 이를 위해 본 연구는 하갈 내러티브가 담고 있는 종교, 인종, 계급, 그리고 성에 대한 차별과 혐오에 저항하는 ‘친타자적 해 석’을 발굴하는 대안적 읽기를 수행하여 작금의 다문화사회 속 성서에 기 반 한 ‘새로운 하갈-이스마엘의 이미지’를 정립한다.
