The purpose of the study is to explore the educational meaning of the teachers’ family bereavement. For this purpose, the following specific directions were investigated. 1. What are the teacher’s bereavement experience? 2. What does the teachers’ family bereavement experience mean? This study’s participants are two teachers who went through a bereavement of a family member. To understand in depth their unique experience, this study conducted a narrative inquiry which is effective in exploring individual experience. The findings from the narrative inquiry are as follows. First, the teachers’ family bereavement is ‘an unexpected life event’ that caused great change. Second, the change in teachers’ lives and values began with ‘a different perspective on family bereavement’, which led to adaptation to a new life. Third, teachers’ personal change in their lives and values was revealed to interact with educational values and affect educational activities. The suggestion based on the conclusion of this study is that support is needed for emotional stability and comfort of teachers suffering from life events.

본 연구는 생애사건으로서 가족 사별 경험이 갖는 교육적 의미를 두 교사의 이야기를 통해 이해하고자 하였으며 이를 위해 연구방법으로서 내러티브 탐구를 선택하였다. 내러티브 탐구 는 인간의 특정한 삶의 모습을 심도있게 탐구하는 과정에서 특정한 경험이 갖는 의미에 주목 한다. 본 연구에서는 두 교사의 가족 사별 경험을 깊이있게 들여다보고 교육적 관점에서 다 시 이야기하는 과정을 통해 그 의미를 드러내고자 하였다. 연구 참여자들이 살아낸 경험을 통해 드러난 의미는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 가족 사별 경험은 연구 참여자들의 삶과 가치관에 큰 변화를 가져다 준 생애사건이다. 둘째, 연구 참여자들에게 일어난 가치관의 변화는 가족 사별 경험을 바라보는 관점의 변화에서 비롯되었으며 이는 새로운 삶에 대한 적응으로 이어졌다. 셋째, 가족 사별을 경험한 교사들의 가치관과 신념의 변화는 그들의 교육관과 교육활동에 직 ‧간접으로 영향을 미치며 경험의 내용과 경험자의 상황에 따라 나타나는 결과는 다양하다. 연구 결과를 토대로 개인적 불행을 경험한 교사들에게 정서적 지지와 위로를 제공하기 위한 지원이 필요하다는 제언을 제시하였다.
