Geneva in the 16th century, when Calvin campaigned for the Reformation, was a socially unstable and very poor city. Calvin purified Geneva through community welfare practices. Looking at Calvin's specific community welfare practices in Geneva, First, we were able to carry out professional relief projects through relief-oriented, specialized operations and management, and systematic relief activities, breaking away from the rule-of-thumb relief methods previously used in Catholicism. Second, we created two types of deacon positions positions in Geneva so that they could perform their work professionally and efficiently in welfare facilities. Third, a system was established in which churches and city authorities collaborated to carry out community welfare projects in Geneva so that local welfare projects in Geneva could be operated stably and effectively. Fourth, by redesigning and institutionalizing Almshouses in Geneva, a service system that can meet various welfare needs has been established to provide care and treatment for the socially underprivileged, education that helps them become self-reliant, and various welfare services in charge of childcare for children. Fifth, the French Relief Fund was established to help Geneva's poor refugees and solve various welfare problems for the socially underprivileged through systematic fundraising and distribution. Sixth, a social enterprise, a silk factory, was established in Geneva to help poor evacuees who at the time had the skills of sericulture and sericulture make their living and self-sufficiency. Through Calvin's community welfare practice, it was possible to overcome the welfare problems of various scattered communities in Geneva and helped the Reformation succeed in Geneva. We can gain an insight into the implications of the Korean church through Calvin's community welfare practice. First, using the role of a double deacon in Geneva as a lesson, we recognize that all members of the church are responsible for the welfare of the community as well as serving the church, and the church should actively establish a place for members to devote themselves to welfare in the community. Second, using Calvin's public-private cooperation in Geneva as a lesson, we can explore the efficiency and development direction of community welfare through cooperation with local churches and public institutions. Third, looking at Calvin's welfare program, which created and distributed the French Relief Fund, a voluntary fund for the relief of poor refugees and the socially disadvantaged in Geneva, local churches in Korea recognize that there should be a promotion of social welfare for institutional efforts to actively utilize the church's finances for the vulnerable in the community.

칼빈이 종교개혁운동을 펼쳤던 16세기 제네바는 가난과 혼돈의 도시였다. 이런 제 네바를 칼빈은 지역사회복지실천을 통하여서 정화시켜 나갔다. 구체적인 칼빈이 행한 제네바에서의 지역사회복지를 살펴보면, 첫째, 이전의 가톨릭에서 해오던 주먹구구식 구호방식을 탈피해 구제의 집중화, 운영과 관리의 전문화, 체계적인 구호 활동 이 세 가지를 통하여 전문적인 구호사업이 가능토록 하였다. 둘째, 제네바에 이중 집사직인 재정 운영을 담당하는 집사와 직접적인 돌봄을 당담하는 집사를 두어 이들을 통해서 복지시설에서의 전문적인 사역이 가능토록 하였다. 셋째, 제네바의 지역사회복지사업 을 교회와 시 당국이 상호 협력하여 수행하는 체계를 만들어 제네바의 지역 복지사업 이 안정적으로 운영될 수 있게 하였다. 넷째, 제네바의 복지시설인 구빈원을 재설계하 여 제도화함으로 다양한 복지요구를 충족할 수 있는 서비스 체계를 갖추었다. 다섯째, 프랑스 구호기금을 설립하여 체계적인 모금과 분배를 통해 제네바의 사회적 약자들의 다양한 복지문제를 해결할 수 있게 하였다. 여섯째, 제네바에 사회적기업인 견직공장 을 만들어 피난민들의 생계와 자활을 도왔다. 이와 같은 칼빈의 지역사회복지실천을 통해 한국교회의 시사점을 통찰할 수 있다. 첫째, 제네바의 이중 집사 직분을 통한 복지 사역을 보며 교회의 모든 직분자들이 적극적으로 지역사회에서 복지 사역을 감당 할 수 있는 장을 마련해야 한다. 둘째, 칼빈이 지역사회복지를 위해 시 당국과 협력관 계를 맺은 사실을 보며, 교회와 공적 기관과의 복지를 위한 협력의 필요성을 알게 된 다. 셋째, 칼빈의 제네바에서의 가난한 피난민들과 사회적 약자들의 구호를 위한 자발 적 기금인 프랑스 구호기금을 조성하여 배분하였던 복지 사역을 보며, 한국의 지역교 회들은 교회의 재정을 지역사회의 취약계층들을 위해서 적극적으로 사용할 수 있도록 하는 제도적 노력을 위한 사회복지를 위한 추동이 있어야 함을 알게 한다.
