The aim of this paper is to examine the Plantinga-Dennett debate on the compatibility of science and religion, and to interpret the positions of both. Concretely, considering the theory of evolution as the representative of science and Christianity as the representative of religion, we examined whether evolutionary theory and Christian theism contradict each other. Plantinga introduces the discussion by defending the claim that contemporary evolutionary theory is not incompatible with religious belief. As the key theses of the theory, Plantinga points out ① the ancient earth thesis, ② the thesis of descent with modification, ③ the common ancestry thesis, and ④ natural selection, and examines whether these claims could be accepted from a Christian point of view. It is judged that not only ①~ ③, but also even ④ are not in conflict with the core argument of Christianity. Plantinga points out that when some claim that evolution is incompatible with religious belief, they mean that evolution, understood as an unguided or unplanned process, is incompatible with religious belief. However, the theory of evolution itself does not show that the process is unguided; this is an add-on by those like Dennett who wish to co-opt evolution as an argument for naturalism. Evolutionary theory itself does not show that there is no design in nature, and could harmonize with the Christian theory of creation, he notes. One thing that is striking about Dennett’s replies to Plantinga is his style of arguing. It is suffused with a certain arrogance about the subject matter, where he comes close to simply assuming the truth of his position, begging many of the important questions, and not addressing them adequately. Thus, in his reply to Plantinga on the question of there possibly being an intelligent mind behind sensible objects, Dennett suggests that we could also say that Superman is behind the universe. Dennett agrees that evolution may be compatible logically with religious belief, but it is also logically compatible with Supermanism, No matter how logically possible a theory is, it is not all meaningful, and to be truly meaningful, it must remain within the scope of nature. Only if we explain natural phenomena, especially natural selection in evolution, based on naturalism, it comes to us in a meaningful way, so Dennett. However, Dennett’s naturalism was regarded by Plantinga as the biggest problem as a prejudice that he would close his eyes to the realm of the supernatural from the beginning. After all, the difference between the two men on the compatibility of science and religion depends on how to understand naturalism.
