This study examines the ways in which war memories are shaped and remembered in local communities through a case study of a museum in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture, Japan. In Japanese wartime memories, Nagoya is not as widely known as Hiroshima and Nagasaki, which are represented by the memory of the atomic bombings, Okinawa, the site of Japan’s only land battle, or Tokyo and Osaka, which were heavily damaged by air raids. Nevertheless, Nogoya was an important part of the total war of the Imperial Japanese Army, suffering intense air raids, and is indispensable in the history of student mobilization and the forced mobilization of Koreans. In addition to the Nagoya City Museum, a public history museum that exhibits modern warfare in the context of the city’s history from prehistoric times to the present day, there are currently three peace (and war) museums in Nagoya that are operated by different entities, The Aichi Peace Memorial Museum, the War and Peace Museum PEACE AICHI, and the Aichi and Nagoya War Museum play a role in remembering and passing on the war. The conflict over war memory remains a challenge between Japan and Asia, between the state (administration) and citizens (civilians), and incompatible war memories may prove that the war is not forgotten, but rather that negative memories such as memory of war crimes are absent. The museum is a place where this is starkly demonstrated, but also a place where it can be overcome.

본 연구는 전쟁 기억이 지역사회에서 어떤 형태로 구현되고 있는지를 일본 아이치현(愛知 県)의 나고야(名古屋) 시내의 박물관을 사례로 고찰하는 것이다. 일본의 전쟁 기억 속에서 나 고야시는 대일본제국 총력전의 중요한 부분을 담당한 지역으로서 격렬한 공습의 피해를 입었 으며, 학도동원과 조선인강제동원의 역사에 있어서도 빼놓을 수 없는 곳이다. 현재 나고야시 에는 선사시대부터 현대에 이르기까지의 통사 속에서 근대의 전쟁 시기를 전시하고 있는 공 립의 역사박물관 <나고야시박물관>(名古屋市博物館)을 비롯하여, 설치와 운영의 주체가 다 른 세 곳의 평화(전쟁)박물관, 다시 말해 <아이치 평화기념관>(愛知平和記念館), <전쟁과 평 화의 자료관 피스 아이치>(戦争と平和の資料館ピースあいち), <아이치・나고야 전쟁에 관한 자 료관>(愛知・名古屋 戦争に関する資料館)이 전쟁을 기억하고 계승하는 역할을 하고 있다. 본 연구에서는 각 관이 어떠한 입장과 역사 인식에 기초하여 설립되고 어떠한 전쟁 기억을 계승 하고자 하는지를 통해 국가 차원이 아닌 지역 차원에서 전쟁을 기억하는 모습을 고찰하고자 한다. 일본과 아시아, 국가(공공행정)와 시민(민간활동) 사이에는 전쟁 기억을 둘러싼 갈등은 여 전히 과제로 남아있는데, 양립할 수 없는 전쟁 기억은 전쟁은 망각 된 것이 아니라 전쟁 가해 와 같은 부(負)의 기억이 결여되어 있음을 증명하는 것일 것이다. 박물관은 이를 극명하게 보 여주는 장소이며 한편으로 이를 극복할 수 있는 장소이기도 하다는 것을 보여준다.
