In the book of Job in the Old Testament, Job is portrayed as a righteous figure who undergoes a faith crisis while facing unexplained afflictions. During this time, his debate with friends becomes pivotal in Job’s transformation, particularly with God's absence during his tribulations. The primary objective of this study is to demonstrate how Job’s faith journey aligns with James Fowler's development stages of faith theory. This theory considers faith to be a constantly changing and developing phenomenon, shaped by interactions with transcendent values, powers, and individuals, as well as by life experiences. Since Job's struggle and unmerited suffering reflect stages three to five of faith development, this article will only examine these stages, despite the range of stages spanning from zero to six in the theory. Stage 3 depicts Job's pious existence as a just member of the Deuteronomistic theology community. In Stage 4, Job’s character develops through his sufferings and the community’s disputable interpretation of them. In Stage 5, he encounters a manifestation of God, leading him to attain a new level of faith based on the confidence garnered in Stage 4. In stages three to five, Job’s development of faith was achieved through self-reflection, community interaction, and interaction with God in the midst of incomprehensible suffering. The text clarifies that faith is a multidimensional concept that develops through interactions with various elements of oneself, interactions with other community members, and responses to God’s transcendent actions. Therefore, this paper concurs with James Fowler who emphasized the importance of understanding the various elements that influence faith and goes on to counter the criticism that his theory of faith development is psychologically oriented and thus non-biblical. As opposed to the above-mentioned denunciation, the current article has concluded that James Fowler’s theory regarding faith stages presents a convincing elucidation of how Job’s faith matures and changes, as portrayed in the Book of Job.
