Since Demerjian et al. (2012) proposed managerial ability as the most influential factor in organizational decision-making, related research has been very active. This study aims to analyze the research trends of Korean research articles on managerial ability and the findings by research topic and suggest implications for further research. This study analyzes 87 articles on managerial ability which are registered in the Korean Journal Index (www.kci.go.kr). The period of publication is from 2013 to 2022. The results of the research trend analysis are as follows. First, the number of articles on managerial ability has been steadily increasing and is expected to continue to increase in the future. Second, 15% of the articles are published in journals other than management journals. Third, the vast majority of prior researches analyze the manufacturing industry. Fourth, there is one paper that applies a measure of managerial ability as a dependent variable. Fifth, there are 21 papers related to corporate performance, and research is being conducted on various topics such as financial reporting quality, compensation, audit, and taxation. Based on this study, the following points should be considered for further research. First, it is necessary to study managerial ability in specific industries other than manufacturing industry. It is necessary to study how managerial ability affects companies in specific industries other than manufacturing. In addition, there is a need to conduct various studies related to unlisted companies or small and medium-sized enterprises. Second, the regression model of Demerjian et al. (2012), which uses the managerial ability measure as the dependent variable, should be cautious of the possibility of type I error. Third, efforts should be made to explain new management phenomena using various measures of managerial ability, such as strategic ability and operational ability. Fourth, research on the relationship between managerial ability and non-financial performance is needed. In particular, there is a lack of research on the relevance of ESG, which is becoming a major research topic. Various studies are needed on the relationship between ESG and managerial ability. This study has academic significance in that it enhances the overall understanding of managerial ability research by analyzing the trend of domestic research on managerial ability, which has been actively conducted recently as a new research topic. In addition, we expect that this study will provide practical help to subsequent researchers in conducting research by suggesting considerations for future research.

조직의 의사결정에 가장 많은 영향을 미치는 경영자의 능력 측정방식을 Demerjian et al.(2012) 이 새롭게 제시한 이후 관련 연구는 매우 활발하게 진행되고 있다. 본 연구는 경영자 능력 관련 국 내 연구논문들의 연구동향 및 연구주제별 연구결과를 분석한 후 후속 연구에 대한 시사점을 제시하 고자 한다. 본 연구는 한국학술지인용색인(www.kci.go.kr)에 등록된 경영자 능력 관련 87편의 논문 을 분석대상으로 한다. 해당 논문의 게재기간은 2013년부터 2022년까지이다. 연구동향 분석결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 경영자능력 관련 논문 게재편수는 꾸준히 증가하고 있는 추세이고, 지속적으로 증가할 것으로 예상된다. 둘째, 경영학관련 학술지가 아닌 타 학문분야 학술지 게재도 15%를 차지 하고 있다. 셋째, 선행연구 대다수가 제조업을 분석대상으로 하고 있다. 넷째, 경영자능력 측정치를 종속변수로 적용한 논문이 1편 있다. 다섯째, 기업성과와 관련된 논문이 21편으로 가장 많고, 재무 보고품질, 보상, 감사, 세무 등 다양한 주제로 연구가 진행되고 있다. 본 연구를 통해 후속 연구에서 고려해야 할 사항은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 제조업 이외의 특정산업에서 경영자능력이 기업에 어떤 영 향을 미치는지에 대한 연구가 필요하다. 또한, 비상장기업 또는 중소기업과 관련한 다양한 연구가 필요하다. 둘째, Demerjian et al.(2012)의 경영자 능력 측정치를 종속변수로 이용하는 회귀분석 모 형에서는 제1종오류 발생가능성을 주의해야 한다. 셋째, 전략능력과 운영능력 등 다양한 경영자 능 력 측정치를 이용한 새로운 경영현상을 설명하려는 노력이 필요하다. 넷째, 경영자능력과 비재무성 과와의 관련성에 대한 연구가 꾸준히 요구된다. 특히 새롭게 주된 연구주제로 자리잡고 있는 ESG 와 경영자 능력의 관련성에 대한 다양한 연구가 필요하다. 본 연구는 새로운 연구주제로 최근 활발 하게 수행되고 있는 경영자능력 관련 국내 연구동향을 분석하여 경영자 능력연구에 대한 전반적인 이해를 증진시켰다는 점에서 학문적 의의가 있다. 또한, 본 연구가 후속연구에서 고려할 사항들을 제시하여 후속연구자들이 연구를 수행하는 데 있어 실질적인 도움이 될 것으로 기대한다.
