The concept of empathy holds significance in contemporary society. As contemporary society progresses towards an information-oriented society, the individual-centered way of life expands. However, in contrast, humans appear to be increasingly alienated and disconnected. In light of these issues observed in contemporary society, this study first conducted a literature review of prior research to clarify the concept of empathy, which is being considered as a solution to the problems faced by contemporary society. While tracing the origin and meaning of the concept of empathy, an exploration was made into why empathy remains an ambiguous notion and why even its definition has not achieved consensus until now. Within the concept of empathy lies confusion and chaos, yet it is undoubtedly a powerful concept. Through an examination of Heinz Kohut, who actively embraced empathy in clinical settings, the reasons behind its potency were explored. According to Kohut, empathy can be regarded as a scientific observational technique that enables emotional clarity experiences. Furthermore, it not only provides a mental oxygen supply to individuals but also possesses the power to facilitate human creative endeavors. Building upon Kohut's understanding of empathy, Chris Schlauch's reinterpretation was then examined, delving into empathy from a pastoral counseling perspective. The researcher extended Schlauch's delineation of empathy as a 'style of knowing' and 'style of relating,' progressing to conceptualize empathy as a 'style of getting to know' and 'style of forming relationships' for pastoral counselors. This underscores the significance of the attitude and approach of pastoral counselors who employ empathy. As evidenced above, the researcher comprehended the concept of empathy and subsequently examined the implications of empathy within the context of clinical practice, particularly in pastoral counseling. Through the implications of empathy in pastoral counseling elucidated by this study, there is a hope that it would be practically beneficial to pastoral counselors aiming to engage in empathetic counseling. Additionally, there is an anticipation that pastoral counselors, while utilizing empathy, would actively embrace a proactive and creative approach, unafraid of mistakes and failures.

공감이라는 개념은 현대사회에서 중요하다. 현대사회가 정보화 사회로 더욱 발전 해 가면서 개인 중심의 생활방식이 확대되고 있는 가운데, 이와는 반대로 인간은 더 욱 소외되고 단절되는 모습을 보이고 있기 때문이다. 이에 본 연구에서는 현대사회가 보이는 문제에 대한 해결방안으로까지 거론되는 공감에 대해 먼저 선행연구를 통해 개념 정리를 실시해 보았다. 공감이라는 개념의 유래와 의미를 추적하면서 왜 공감이 모호한 개념인지, 그리고 어떤 이유로 공감에 대한 정의조차 합의되지 않은 채 지금 까지 올 수 있었는지 확인해 보았다. 공감의 개념 안에는 혼란스러움과 혼돈이 있지만, 그럼에도 불구하고 공감은 매우 힘 있는 개념이 아닐 수 없다. 임상의 현장에서 공감을 중요시 여기며 적극적으로 활 용한 하인즈 코헛을 통해 그 이유를 살펴보았다. 코헛에 의하면 공감은 과학적 관찰 기법으로써 볼 수 있고, 정서적인 명료화 체험을 가능케 하는 특징이 있음을 알 수 있다. 게다가 공감은 인간에게 정신적 산소를 제공할뿐더러, 인간의 창조 작업을 가능케 하는 힘까지 있다. 이러한 코헛의 공감 이해를 받아들여 재해석한 크리스 슐라흐를 통해 본 연구에서는 공감을 목회상담자 중심으로 고찰해 보았다. 연구자는 공감을 ‘앎 의 방식’과 ‘관계의 방식’으로 규명한 슐라흐의 모습에서 한 걸음 더 나아가, 공감을 목회상담자의 ‘알아가는 방식’과 ‘관계 맺는 방식’으로 보았다. 이를 통해 공감을 사용 하는 목회상담자의 자세와 태도가 목회상담 현장에서 중요하다는 것을 강조한 것이다. 위에서 살펴본 것처럼 연구자는 공감이라는 개념에 대한 이해를 실시한 후 임상적 현장, 특히 목회상담 현장에서 목회상담자 중심으로 공감에 대한 함의를 살펴보았다. 본 연구를 통해 규명된 목회상담에서의 공감의 함의를 통해 공감적 상담을 실시하려 는 목회상담자들에게 실질적인 도움이 되기를 바란다. 목회상담자가 공감을 사용하되 실수와 실패를 두려워하지 않고 적극적이고 창의적으로 나아갈 수 있기를 또한 기대 해 본다.
