Collision algorithms that decide the behavior of autonomous vehicles(AVs) in the event of an accident can have a significant impact on individuals' attitudes towards the AVs. This study utilized an online experiment to investigate whether collision algorithms (selfish vs. utilitarian) can affect individuals' intentions to use autonomous vehicles (AVs), and to examine possible mediators, trust and perceived quality. The results indicate that selfish collision algorithms, when compared to utilitarian algorithms, increased users' intentions to use AVs, and positively influenced trust and perceived quality of the AVs. Furthermore, trust and perceived quality of the AVs were found to be positively associated with individuals' intentions to use AVs. Finally, trust and perceived quality were identified as mediators between the collision algorithms and individuals' intentions to use AVs.
