한국문화예술은 청년 중심으로 k-Pop, Netflix 등을 통해 한국 교유의 콘텐츠가 세계화되고 있다. 특히 연극예술은 몸이라는 기표를 통해 관객과의 특수 관계성을 통해 직, 간접적으로 피력하는 방식으로 배우 라는 실체적 존재를 통해 발전해왔다. 더 나아가 공연예술의 미래척도인 전국대학의 연극관련학과에 대 한 청소년들의 수요가 늘어나면서 연극의 확장적 개념 결과인 전국 규모의 대학연극제가 활성화되고 있 다. 본고(本稿)는 충청남도 예산군이라는 작은 소규모 도시에서 국제행사를 개최하고 있는 예당국제대학 연극제의 변천 과정과 경연작품의 특성을 연구하고자 한다. 본 행사는 제 11회를 맞이한 예당국제공연에 술제의 부대행사로 제 6회부터 예당전국대학연극제로 출발하였으며 제 7회부터 예당국제대학연극제로 명칭이 변경되어 현재까지 지속되고 있다. 예당이라는 명칭은 예당저수지의 약칭으로 천혜의 자연환경 을 보유한 예산군을 대표하는 공간을 중심으로 청년예술가들의 문화적 토대를 마련하고 정기적인 문화 공연을 활성화하여 관광객의 상품화를 극대화하는데 목적을 두었다. 특히 예당국제공연예술제와 대학연 극제를 개최하게 된 배경에는 예산군은 군 최초로 2016, 2019년 제 31회 전국연극제, 제 23회 전국청소년 연극제를 적극적으로 유치하여 개량적 성과를 보였다. 또한, 예산군 내 극단 예촌의 중심적 역할로 대한 민국연극제와 전국청소년연극제 대상을 수상하며 지역을 넘어 전국적인 성과를 발휘하였다. 이러한 노 력과 더불어 지속적인 연극발전을 위해선 당면과제로 인근 예술대학과의 적극적인 협력적 교류, 예당저 수지 소규모 공연장의 확충, 연극제를 통한 청년예술가들의 안정적 일자리 창출이 중요하다. 특히 연극 제를 기반으로 계절별 연극제를 개발하여 청년들의 안정적 예술환경을 제공하고 연극창조 활동에 전념 할 수 있는 분위기를 조성하여야 한다. 또한, 문화예술 청년들의 수도권 중심의 인재 유출을 막고 지역 예술의 문제점으로 대두되는 고령화된 극단 운영을 개선해야 한다. 또한 예당국제대학연극제의 변천 과 정과 연출특성을 연구하여 지역의 고유성을 통한 미래 연극제로 도약하기 위한 대안을 제시하고 천착하 고자 한다.
