This paper was written with the aim of reviewing existing research on Younghae(寧海) Incident and looking at future research tasks based on this. Existing studies have called this case the Rebellion of Yi Pil-je(李弼濟), the Rise of the Younghae, the Revolution of the Donghak Peasant in Younghae, and the Rebellion of the Donghak Peasant in Younghae. This means that this case has not yet been established in historical terms. The academic conference “The Beginning of the Donghak Revolution,” held in 2014, “Younghae Donghak Revolution” in March 1871, became a branch of the study of this case. This is because through this academic conference, the trend to define this case as the “Younghae Donghak Revolution” has begun in earnest. However, considering that research on this case has not been conducted properly, this trend can be said to be hasty. This is because even at this academic conference, the terms were not unified, and the academic community did not agree. In the future, several studies on this case should be conducted. First, it is necessary to confirm how the Donghak organization participated and whether it has a revolutionary character. Second, it is necessary to confirm how the religious organization of Donghak participated. Third, it is necessary to confirm what meaning and status this case has in regional history in the course of research on the history of Younghae. Fourth, new data being discovered in the region should be reviewed, and the data should be collected, spatialized, and provided to researchers. Finally, the general public, not Donghak, should reveal why they participated in this case and who they are.

본고는 영해사건에 대한 기존의 연구를 검토하고 이를 토대로 향후 연구과제가 무엇인가를 살펴보려는 목적으로 작성되었다. 기왕의 연구는 이 사건을 이필제의 난·寧海起兵·영해 동학란·寧海衙變·영해 동학농민혁명·영해동학농민의 난 등으로 칭하였다. 이는 곧 이 사건이 아직 역사용어로 정립되지 못하였다는 것을 의미한다. 2014년 개최된 학술회의 ｢동학혁명의 시발점, 1871년 3월 ‘영해동학혁명’｣는 이 사건 연구의 분기가 되었다. 이 학술회의를 통해 이 사건을 ‘영해동학혁명’으로 규정하려는 흐름이 본격화되었기 때문이다. 하지만 이 사건에 대한 연구가 제대로 이루어지지 않았다는 점을 고려하면 이러한 흐름은 성급한 측면이 있다고 할 수 있다. 이 학술회의에서조차도 용어가 통일되지 않았으며, 학계에서도 동의되고 있지 않기 때문이다. 향후 이 사건에 대한 연구는 다음의 몇 가지가 이루어져야 한다. 첫째, 동학 조직이 어떠한 형태로 참여하였으며, 그것이 혁명적 성격을 띠고 있는가를 확인해야 한다. 둘째, 동학의 종교조직이 어떠한 형태로 참여했는가를 확인해야 한다. 셋째, 영해지역사의 연구 과정 속에서 이 사건이 지역사적으로 어떠한 의미와 위상이 있는가를 확인해야 한다. 넷째, 지역에서 발굴되고 있는 새로운 자료에 대한 검토가 이루어져야 하며, 그 자료들을 모아 자료집으로 공간하여 연구자들에게 제공해야 한다. 마지막으로 동학교도가 아닌 일반 민중은 왜 이 사건에 참여하였으며, 그들은 누구인가를 밝혀야 한다.
