The purpose of this paper is to examine how Japan’s response to Joseon’s “dependent” and “independent” issues has changed the international order in East " issues has changed the international order in East Asia. Japan’s transition to modern times was a process of breaking down the traditional relationship between Joseon and China. At the same time, Japan sought to establish a new regional order centered on its own country. The issue of “dependent” and “independent” that became an issue in the process is only one of the cases in which Japan and China used traditional tribute relations. The ultimate purpose of Japan and China was to secure influence over Joseon. This paper aims to identify the nature of Japan’s response to “dependent” and “independent” in negotiations for the post-treatment of the Im-O Military Revolt and the Gapsin Coup.

본고는 근대 일본의 팽창 과정에 초점을 맞추어 조선의 ‘속방’과 ‘자주’에 대한 일본의 대 응이 동아시아 국제질서를 어떻게 변화시켜 나가는지를 고찰하고 있다. 특히 조선 ‘속방 자주’ 에 대한 일본의 전략을 임오군란 사후처리와 갑신정변 사후처리를 위한 협상 속에서 포착하여 그 성격을 규명하고자 했다. 일본의 근대국제체제로의 이행은 조선과 중국과의 조공책봉관계를 타파하는 과정에 다름 아니었으며, 이는 곧 조선과 중국의 관계 속에서 일본을 중심으로 하는 새로운 지역질서를 구축하기 위한 과정이기도 했다. 그 과정에서 쟁점이 된 조선의 ‘속방’과 ‘자주’ 논쟁은 중국과 일본이 전통적인 조공관계를 상투적으로 이용했던 사례 중 하나일 뿐이 며, 양국의 궁극적인 목적은 조선에 대한 영향력을 확보하려는 데 있었다. 그리고 이러한 일본 의 근대국제체제로의 능동적인 대응은 일본이 제국주의 국가의 반열에 오르는 것을 꿈꾸게 되 는 효시로 작용하게 된다.

本稿の目的は、朝鮮の ｢属邦｣と ｢自主｣問題に対する日本の対応が東アジアの国際秩序をどの ように変化させたかを考察することである。日本の近代への移行は、朝鮮と中国の伝統的な関係を 打破する過程であった。同時に、日本は自国を中心とした新たな地域秩序の構築を追求しようとし た。 その過程で争点になった ｢属邦｣と ｢自主｣の問題は日本と中国が伝統的な朝貢関係を常套的 に利用した事例の一つに過ぎない。日本と中国の究極的な目的は朝鮮に対する影響力を確保する ことにあった。本稿は ｢属邦｣と ｢自主｣に対する日本の対応を壬午軍乱と甲申政変の事後処理のた めの交渉の中で捉え、その性格をあきらかにしようとする。
