The purpose of this article is to understand the reality of Korean mode rn Buddhism through two photos. The first is a photo of what has been k nown so far as enlightenment activist Lee Dong-in. Recently, it has been confirmed that the original of this photo is a postcard published after 193 3. Existing photos left only the person part of the postcard, and the desc ription at the bottom to convey the fact that it was a postcard was delet ed. As a result, this photo remained like a portrait of a monk. Looking at Lee Dong-in's thoughts and activities, it is absolutely impossible for him t o appear as a model for postcards. By analyzing the postcards, it was det ermined in detail that the person in the photo was not Lee Dong-in, but a monk from the 1930s. The second is a photo of taken on Febr uary 23, 1884 by American astronomer Percival Lowell. This photo was n ot included in the Chosön, the land of the morning calm written by Perci val in 1885. It remained only as a collection on his album, but recently re leased on the Lowell Observatory's website. It is presumed to be the olde st surviving photo of a monk in Korea. It was in 2019 that Korean researchers began to take an interest in Lo well's photos. Based on Percival's travelogues at Hwagye-sa Temple and t he diary of Yun Chi-ho, who traveled with him at the time of filming, it is estimated that the filming took place in the afternoon of February 23, 1884, thereby claiming that this photo is the oldest extant photo of a Kor ean monk. It is hoped that these two photos will be reviewed to correct t he previously misunderstood photos of Lee Dong-in, and help to understa nd the true face of Korean modern Buddhism through Percival's photos a nd records.

이 글은 두 장의 사진을 통해 한국 근대불교의 실상을 이해하는데 목적 이 있다. 첫 번째는 지금까지 개화승 이동인으로 알려져 있는 사진이다. 최근 이 사진의 원본이 1933년 이후에 발간한 사진엽서라는 사실을 확인 하였다. 기존의 사진은 사진엽서에서 인물 부분만을 남기고, 엽서라는 사 실을 전하는 하단의 설명문은 삭제하였다. 그 결과 이 사진은 마치 진영 사진처럼 남게 되었다. 이동인의 행장과 활동을 살펴보면 그가 사진엽서의 모델로 등장한다는 것은 있을 수 없는 일이다. 기왕의 연구 성과를 토대로 그의 활동을 검토하고, 사진엽서를 분석하여 사진의 인물은 이동인이 아닌 1930년대의 스님임을 자세히 규명하였다. 두 번째는 미국의 천문학자 퍼시벌 로웰이 1884년 2월 23일에 촬영한 <화계사의 스님들> 사진이다. 현전하는 한국 최초의 스님 사진으로 추정한 다. 퍼시벌은 조선 기행문을 모아 1885년 미국에서 단행본을 출간하였는데 이 책에는 이 사진이 수록되지 않았다. 2001년 이 책의 우리말 번역본이 출간되었는데, 원본에 없는 여러 장의 사진을 추가하면서도 역시 <화계사 의 스님들> 사진은 수록하지 않았다. 이후 퍼시벌의 사진이 인터넷에 모두 공개되면서 본격적으로 국내 연구자들의 주목을 받았고, 2019년 이 사진이 국내에 알려지게 되었다. 촬영 당시 퍼시벌의 화계사 기행문과 여정을 함 께했던 윤치호의 일기 등을 통해 촬영 시기가 1884년 2월 23일 오후라는 사실을 추정하고, 이로써 이 사진이 현전하는 가장 오래된 스님 사진이라 는 견해를 피력한다. 이와 같은 두 장의 사진을 각각 검토하여 지금까지 잘못 알려진 이동인 사진을 바로 잡고, 퍼시벌의 사진과 기록을 통해 한국 근대불교의 참모습을 이해하는데 도움이 되기를 기대한다.
