Culture is not what is biologically inherited but rather actions based on beliefs or social values, meanwhile learned through a means called language and thus shared socially. Important as culture is, understanding toward other cultures can only be possible through translation. From the view of culture-considered translation theory, translation is determined as a special form of intercultural communication. So the purpose of translation lies in overcoming intercultural barriers. And the most essential factor in ‘culture translation’ is ‘cultural elements’. This paper determined cultural elements as words that show cultural differences between source words and translated words containing cultural distinctions associated with their histories, socials, customs, etc. Based on above, this paper took Feng Jicai’s full-length novel—— as the text, examined the words concerning specific cultures, namely foot-bingding culture, traditional culture, funeral cultures, costume cultures, etc. Through this study, it’s found that the interpreter adopted more than one strategy dealing with the cultural elements when translating the novel. We can also tell that dissimilation and naturalization are adequately adopted as translating methods rather than deletion, and there are parts where the interpreter kept the phonetic messages while adding additional information into the text.

문화란 생물학적 유전에 의한 것이 아니라 신념이나 사회적 가치 등에 의해 이루어진 행위 들이며, 동시에 언어라는 매개를 통하여 학습하고 그것이 사회적으로 공유된 것이다. 이렇듯 문화가 중요한 것만큼 타문화에 대한 이해에서 번역을 통한 이해가 하나의 중요한 방도라고 도 할 수 있다. 문화와 관련되는 번역이론의 관점에서 보면 번역은 문화 간의 커뮤니케이션의 특수한 경우로 정의된다. 따라서 번역의 목적은 문화 간의 장벽을 극복하는데 있다. 문화번역 에서 가장 핵심적인 요인은 ‘문화소’이다. 본고에서는 문화소를 출발어 문화권의 역사, 사회, 관습 등과 관련된 문화적 특징을 가진 출발어와 그것이 도착어 문화권내에서의 문화적 표현 차이의 개념으로 규정하였다. 이런 의미에서 본고는 풍기재의 장편소설 <삼촌금련>을 텍스트 로 삼고 특정 문화와 관련된 개념 즉 전족 문화소, 전통예술 문화소, 장례 문화소, 복식 문화 소 등에 대하여 상세히 천명하였다. 상기의 문화소들은 <삼촌금련>의 문화소 이미지를 깊이 있게 분석하는데서 매우 중요한 내용으로 되는 동시에 중국의 전통적인 전족문화를 폭넓게 이해하는데서 홀시할 수 없는 독특한 풍속문화 면에서의 의미를 지닌다. 그리고 역자가 번역 과정에서 한 가지 이상의 번역전략을 활용하면서 또 삭제 전략보다는 이화 전략과 귀화 전략 을 적절히 결합했다고 보아진다. 아울러 중국어 원음대로 음차 번역하고 텍스트 안에 추가 설명하는 방법을 많이 사용했다는 것도 알 수 있다.
