Prisons provide correctional education to rehabilitate inmates. However, since the recidivism rate in Korea is still high, the question of whether the correctional education is effective is constantly being raised. The purpose of this study is to expand the understanding about the correctional education by interviewing the correctional officials. As a result of the study, correctional education could be divided into the intrinsic purpose and the extrinsic purpose. The intrinsic purpose of correctional education is cultivation and improvement. The extrinsic purpose of correctional education is self-discipline and relieving the public's anxiety about crime. The functions of correctional education appearing as these purposes are fulfilled and can be broadly divided into four categories. These categories are the labor force preparation function, the function of the changing into the moderator, the function of the changing into a formal participant, and the selective resocialization function. This study suggests that correctional education should integrate fragmented learning and life of inmates. Correctional education should pursue a lifelong education orientation and it needs to expand the contents and direction.

교도소는 수용자의 교화를 목적으로 다양한 교정교육을 제공 하고 있다. 하지만 우리나라의 재범률은 여전히 높아 교정교육의 적절성에 대한 문제 제기가 계속되고 있다. 본 연구는 교정공무 원의 면담을 통해 교정교육의 목적과 기능을 분석하여 교정교육 의 현 상황에 대한 이해를 확장하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 연구 결과, 교정교육의 목적은 함양과 개선이라는 내재적 목 적과 자기규율과 국민의 범죄 불안감 해소라는 외재적 목적으로 수렴되었다. 교정교육의 기능은 노동력 준비, 절제자로의 변화, 형식적 참여자로의 변화, 선택적 재사회화의 4가지로 나타났다. 본 연구는 교정교육이 수용자의 교정교화와 출소 후 안정적인 삶에 도움을 주기 위해서는 파편화된 수용자의 학습과 삶을 통 합하여 수용자의 종합적 발달을 중심으로 재구성할 필요가 있음 을 제시하였다. 이를 위해 교정교육이 평생교육 지향성을 추구하 며 내용과 방향 등을 확대해 나갈 필요가 있다고 제언하였다.
