Elementary school mathematics textbooks in South Korea have been in the form of government-designated textbooks compiled according to the curriculum announced by the Ministry of Education. Furthermore their dependence on textbooks in elementary school mathematics classes in Korea is very high. Therefore, the compilation of high-quality math textbooks is very important and requires more than efforts to revise the curriculum. Korea's elementary school math textbooks have shown gradual changes through several development projects. However, textbooks prior to the seventh curriculum were considered to have been negligent in developing the system in terms of external composition, focusing on changes in the internal composition system that reflect the curriculum. Authorized Korean elementary school math textbooks will be applied in 2022. Therefore, this study closely examined the history of Korean elementary school mathematics textbooks at this point in time, focusing on changes in the external composition system. This derived in significant implications for future development of the authorized textbooks. According to this study, the external composition system of elementary school mathematics textbooks in Korea reflected changes in the curriculum and economic development of the times, and continued to improve at a certain period of intervals. In addition, Korea's elementary school math textbooks have shown the biggest changes in the external composition system since the 7th curriculum period textbooks, and are expected to continue to make new changes in illustration and editing design among many elements of the external composition system.

지금까지 우리나라의 초등학교 수학 교과서는 교육부가 발표한 교육과정에 따라 편찬되는 국정 교과서의 형태이며, 우리나라 초등학교 수학 수업에서의 교과서 의 존도는 매우 높은 실정이다. 따라서 양질의 수학 교과서 편찬은 수학 교육의 발전 을 위해 매우 중요한 의미를 가지며 교육과정을 개정하는 일 이상의 노력이 필요 하다. 우리나라의 초등학교 수학 교과서는 그동안 여러 차례 개발 작업을 통해 점 진적인 변화를 보여 왔으나, 7차 교육과정 이전의 교과서는 교육과정을 반영한 내 적 구성 체제의 변화에 집중한 나머지 외적 구성 체제 면에서의 발전에 소홀하였 다는 평가를 받기도 하였다. 이에 본 연구는 초등학교 수학 교과서에 검정 교과서 가 적용되는 2022년을 앞둔 현시점에서 우리나라 초등학교 역대 수학 교과서의 외 적 구성 체제를 판형, 활자, 지질, 색상, 쪽수, 삽화 및 편집 디자인의 변화를 중심 으로 면밀히 고찰하고, 이를 통해 향후 검정 교과서의 개발 방향에 유의미한 시사 점을 도출하고자 하였다.
