The purpose of this study is to understand the current status and difficulties of International Science Olympiad programs and find a way to improve their difficulties. For this, we surveyed a total of 36 participants including teachers, students, and educators who participated in an international olympiad competition. As a result, first, in the current International Science Olympiad program, the participant students had a large burden on both participating in the competition and preparing for college examination. The experts were concerned that the decline in the number and competency of the contest participants would not only result in a decrease in awards, but also would disrupt the development of human resources in a field of basic science from a long-term perspective. In terms of teaching and business management activities, it was reported that administrative and financial support and manpower support were insufficient compared to the increasing social demand for the Olympiad. Second, in order to improve these difficulties, it needs to diversify the participant students and the ways to mange the programs, to strengthen the incentives for participant students in the science and engineering field, and in particular to improve the career program. Finally, we discussed the future direction of the International Science Olympiad program and the implications for gifted education.

이 연구의 목적은 현 국제과학올림피아드 프로그램 운영 현황과 어려움을 파악하고, 개선 방안을 모색하는 것이다. 이를 위해 올림피아드에 참여했던 교사와 학생, 참여 기관 전문가 총 36명의 인식을 조사하여 분석하였다. 연구 결과, 첫째, 현재 국제과학올림피아드 프로그램에서 참여학생들은 대회 참여와 대입 준비를 병행하는 것에 대한 부담이 컸으며, 전문가들은 대회 참여자의 수와 역량의 저하로 인해 수상 실적이 줄 뿐 아니라, 장기적으로는 기초과 학계의 인재 육성에 차질이 생길 것을 염려하였다. 교수 활동과 사업 운영 측면에서는 올림피아드 대회에 대해 늘어 나는 사회적 요구에 비해 행·재정적 지원, 인력 공급 지원이 부족하다는 점이 보고되었다. 둘째, 이러한 실태와 어려 움을 개선하기 위하여 프로그램에 참여하는 대상과 운영 방식을 다양화하고, 이공계 분야 학생의 유인책을 강화하며, 특히 진로 프로그램을 내실화하기 위한 방안이 논의되었다. 끝으로 이러한 결과들이 국제과학올림피아드 프로그램의 운영 방향과 영재교육에 시사하는 바를 논의하였다.
