The purpose of this study is to examine the activities and outcomes of the Peabody Mission during the period of early Korean Social Studies. The members of Peabody Mission led the systematic improvement of Korean social studies education and made it take root in the school field. They attempted to establish a national organization called the Korean Social Studies Association to strengthen the capacity of Korean social studies teachers and researchers. It was Jack Allen, one of Peabody members who made a key contribution to the construction of the KSSA. In addition, Peabody members supported to provide detailed guidance on the principles and practices of unit learning in social studies through a book entitled 『Developing Units』. The logic of social studies shared by the Peabody Mission and Koreans was based on the trend of experience-centered curriculum.

이 연구는 한국 사회과의 정착기에 행해진 피바디 사절단의 활동 양상과 그 성과에 대한 고찰이다. 피 바디 사절단은 한국 사회과의 체계적인 개선에 기여하면서 외래교과로서 사회과가 학교 현장에 착근하는데 기여하였다. 이들은 한국 사회과 종사자들의 역량 강화를 위하여 한국사회생활과협의회라는 전국 조직의 창설을 지원하였고, 이 과정에서 핵심적으로 기여한 피바디 단원이 Jack Allen이었다. Jack Allen은 지침서 『한 국사회생활과협의회보고』를 통해 사회과의 일반 원리와 한국 사회과의 당면 과제 및 해결책을 제시하였다. 한편, 피바디 사절단은 『단원의 전개』라는 단행본을 통하여 사회과 단원학습의 원리와 실제에 관하여 체계 적으로 소개하였다. 당시 피바디 사절단과 한국인들이 공유한 사회과의 논리는 경험 중심 교육과정 사조에 기초하였다.
