The academic arguments of multicultural education were mainly based on the concepts of “Multiculturalism” and “Interculturalism”. Multiculturalism was mainly discussed in North American context, whereas Interculturalism in Western European context. Particularly Interculturalism in german society, which dealt with the multiculturalism based upon ethnic identity, has many implications for the multicultural society in Korea. But which is required in applying interculturalism to the educational field is to gain its concrete contents. So with this study I attempt to acquire the concrete contents for practical doing of multicultural education from “Mutual-Inclusivism”(ger. Mutualer Inklusivismus). Mutual-Inclusivism implies the dual principles of Freedom and Love as theoretical basis for inter-religious dialogues. Rather than putting absolute value in one's point of view and tradition, it is the task of reciprocity to secure new self-understanding and understanding of others and other cultures. This study seeks to explore the principles for the practical development of intercultural education through this mutual-Iinclusivism.

다문화교육의 학문적 논거들은 주로 “다문화주의” 및 “상호문화주의” 개념을 토대로 이루어졌다. 다문화주의는 주로 북미를 중심으로, 상호문화주의는 서유럽을 중심으로 논의되었다. 특히 민족적 정체성에 기반 한 사회가 다문화사회로 접어든 상황 속에서 등장한 독일의 상호문화주의는 한국의 다문화사회에 많은 시사점을 준다. 하지만 오늘날 상호문화주의를 교육의 장에 적용함에 있어 요구되는 것은 그 구체적인 내용을 확보하는 것이다. 그래서 본 연구는 상호문화교육의 전개를 위한 구체적인 내용을 “상호포괄주의”로부터 확보하려는 이론적 시도이다. 상호포괄주의는 종교 간의 대화를 위한 학문적 근거로서 자유와 사랑이라는 이중적 원리를 내포한다. 자신의 세계관 및 전통 속에 절대적 가치를 두기 보다는 다른 문화와의 만남 속에서 새로운 자기이해와 타자이해를 확보하는 것이 상호포괄주의의 과제이다. 본 연구는 상호포괄주의를 통하여 상호문화교육을 실제적으로 전개하기 위한 원리를 모색해 보고자 한다.
