The main aim of this paper is to show that the nature of normativity can be better accounted for by a naturalist approach. While the traditional empiricist view on normativity brings about a scepticism of moral knowledge, the rationalist view leaves the question of the source of normativity onto another philosophical riddle of a transcendental reason. A naturalist approach finds a third way between these two horns. A growing body of recent empirical findings shows that normativity is neither arbitrary as the empiricists have suspected, nor does it stand on some universal basis as the rationalists have assumed. Instead, by taking a naturalist stance, we may trace its source back to the commonality of our experience, and its origin from the natural conditions that we share as human beings as we are. This naturalist account for the sources of normativity may not only leave off the difficulties of the empiricist and the rationalist approaches, but clear some new ground for the inquiries into the nature of moral theories.
