The needs for effective counseling strategies in Korean elementary schools are growing but there has been limited research on brief counseling models that can be easily utilized by teachers and counselors. Motivational Interviewing (MI) can be adapted for working with Korean elementary school students in order to increase their readiness for changes. In this paper, the researcher introduces basic concepts, principles, processes, and core skills of MI as well as analyzes the theoretical basis of MI mechanism. Empirical evidence that supports the utility of MI approaches is also presented by reviewing international and domestic literature. Additionally, the researcher discusses specific strategies and recommendations based on MI to address the developmental characteristics and interests of elementary school students. Lastly, future directions for MI research and practice for elementary school counseling are summarized.

초등 교육현장에서 학교상담의 중요성에 대한 인식은 점차 확대되어왔으나 상담활동을 수행 하는 교사․상담자에게 실질적인 도움을 주는 단기상담 모형 및 기법에 대한 탐색은 부족한 실정이다. 이에 본 연구에서는 학생의 변화에 대한 내면적 동기를 강화하기 위한 단기상담모 형 중 하나인 동기강화상담에 주목하였다. 구체적으로, 문헌연구를 통해 동기강화상담이 제 안된 배경과 주요 구성개념, 이론적 원리와 더불어 상담의 과정, 주요 기법을 소개하였다. 또 한 동기강화상담적 접근의 효과성을 검증한 국내외 실증 연구를 분석하여 구체적인 개입전 략을 도출하였다. 이러한 분석을 바탕으로 초등학생의 발달단계를 고려한 동기강화상담적 접 근 활용 방안을 구체적으로 제안하고, 향후 연구 및 상담 실제를 위한 과제를 논의하였다.
