The study of psychopathy, as an emerging and noteworthy scientific field, has already attracted considerable philosophical attention because of the philosophical questions that it raises. The main reason why psychopathy is of interest to philosophy, especially to ethics is because of its importance for understanding meta-ethical issues. Namely, the philosophical interest generated by psychopathy is not because it is an interesting and enigmatic phenomenon, but is due to the way that it raises profound questions about the nature of moral understanding, moral responsibility, moral motivation, and moral judgment. Focusing on the moral understanding and moral responsibility of psychopaths, this paper shows that their moral incompetence is not, as one might think, attributed to their mental illnesses, nor to their problems or deficits of reason, but is primary attributed to their deficits of emotional mechanism, in particular emotional empathy. And then this paper argues the validity of whether psychopaths who are a rational and voluntary, but emotional defective agent can be morally responsible.

최근 상당히 주목받고 있는 과학 분야인 사이코패시에 관한 연구는 그것에서 제기되는 철학적 문제들 때문에 이미 상당한 철학의 관심을 끌고 있다. 사이코패시가 철학, 특히 윤리학의 주목을 끄는 가장 큰 이유는 그것이 메타윤리학적 쟁점을 이해하는 논의하는 데 중요한 단초들을 제공하기 때문이다. 다시 말해, 사이코패시가 윤리학의 흥미를 불러일으키는 이유는 그것이 흥미롭고 수수께끼 같은 현상이기 때문이 아니라 우리의 도덕성 이해, 도덕적 판단, 도덕적 동기, 도덕적 책임성 등과 같은 윤리학의 주요 쟁점들과 관련해서 근본적인 질문을 제기하기 때문이다. 이 논문은 사이코패스의 도덕성 이해와 도덕적 책임성에 초점을 두고 사이코패스의 도덕적 무능이, 흔히 추측하듯이, 정신 질환이나 이성적 능력의 결함에 기인하는 것이 아니라 기본적으로 정서적 메커니즘, 특히 정서적 공감의 결함에 기인함을 보여주고자 한다. 이어서 이성적이고 자발적이지만 정서적으로 결함이 있는 행위자인 사이코패스에게도 온전한 도덕적 책임을 물을 수 있을까 라는 질문의 타당성을 논한다.
