The main purpose of this paper is to critically inquire into Arendt's theory of political judgment, and show that it can be more successfully recounted in terms of Dewey's pragmatic perspective. Although Arendt's notion of judgment is originally grounded in Kant's notion of 'taste' in the Critique of Judgment, Arendt would break with Kant’s transcendental conception of reason. Thus, Arendt did not follow Kant’s notion of 'common sense' as the ultimate constraint of the nihilistic diverge of judgments. Nevertheless, in her later works, Arendt seemed to look for the constraint in some a priori form, if not in Kant’s way, which gave rise to an inconsistency in her own philosophical system as a form of practical pluralism. This problem has not been clearly espoused within Arendt’s works. In this paper, I will suggest that Dewey's 'organic commonality' presented in Experience and Nature may well redress Arendt's unsolved problem. In Dewey’s picture, judgment as a form of higher level experience emerges from the physical level of experience, which is shared by all humans as species. That is, ‘organic commonality’ presented in the shared level of experience seems to suffice to constrain the nihilistic diverge of judgments. I suggest that Dewey’s naturalistic account should work more appropriately in reinterpreting Arendt’s notion of judgment in practical pluralism in empirical terms.

이 논문의 주된 목적은 미완성에 머무른 아렌트의 판단이론을 실용주의적 시각으로 재조명하고, 그녀의 다원주의 논의에서 결여된 제약의 소재를 보완하는 데 있다. 칸트의 『판단력 비판』의 ‘취미’로부터 실마리를 가져온 아렌트의 판단이론은 다원적인 인간의 정치적 행위들이 소통 불가능한 형태로 분기하지 않고 공동체에서 합의할 수 있는 가능성을 ‘공통감각’에서 찾고 있다. 그러나 칸트의 공통감각은 이론적으로 요청된 선험적 형식에서 탈피하지 못한 개념으로 경험적인 제약의 소재로 볼 수 없다. 객관주의적 진리를 거부하고, 칸트의 선험적 구도를 벗어나려는 아렌트의 의도를 감안하면 경험적 영역에서 그 제약을 찾는 것이 적절해 보인다. 필자는 듀이의 『경험과 자연』에서 찾을 수 있는 ‘유기체적 공통성’이 아렌트의 판단이론이 결여하고 있는 경험적인 제약 지점을 잘 설명해 준다고 생각한다. 듀이는 인간의 ‘유기체적 공통성’에 주목하여 몸/마음의 이분법적 구도에서 벗어난 관점을 취하고 있다. 인간이 물리적 층위의 신체의 작용으로부터 환경이나 타인과 상호작용하는 과정에서 창발된 정신 활동은 특수한 개인들이 타인과 경험을 공유할 수 있도록 한다. 즉 특수자들의 행위의 무제약적 난립을 막아 주는 제약은 몸을 중심으로 이루어지는 가장 하위적인 경험으로부터 제공된다는 것이다.
