This study examined a theoretical basis of preceding literatures on teaching and learning approaches especially for school-age learners in terms of sociocultural view and content-based language teaching approach, and presented a concrete education plan for teaching and learning Korean using the school curriculum content of a 6th grade elementary school subject, . It has been found that classroom discourse, as a mediation that enables the learners to make shifts across the oral/written as well as formal/informal continua and support students in adapting their language to context, plays a crucial role in language acquisition and content learning for the Korean as second language(KSL) learners in school age. Therefore, it is necessary that teachers understand the mode-continuum, the movement between spoken and written language, as well as between more casual and more technical language, and interact with the KSL learners in school-age using it. This paper showed an example of grammar teaching method in the context of helping students engage with the text they read in elementary school, moving between everyday language to disciplinary language.

본 연구는 학령기 제2언어 학습자의 교수 학습에 대한 문헌 연구를 통해 교수 학습의 이론적 토대를 검토하고, 이를 바탕으로 교과 내용을 통해 학습 한국어를 교수·학습할 수 있는 구체적인 교육 방안을 제시하고자 하였다. 이는 학령기 학습자의 학습 한국어 능력 향상을 위해서는 교과 수업의 맥락에서 내용 중심의 언어 교육이 이루어지는 것이 가장 효과적이라는 것을 전제한 것이다. 그 결과 학령기 제2언어 학습자의 학습 언어 습득과 내용 학습에서 수업 담화가 매우 큰 역할을 한다는 점, 수업 담화는 일상적인 구어로부터 격식적이고 학술적인 문어에 이르기까지 여러 양식을 오가며, 학생들이 각 교과마다 새로운 언어사용역으로 나아가고 새로운 교과 지식을 학습하는 데에 매개가 됨을 알 수 있었다. 따라서 이들을 대상으로 하는 수업에서 교사는 다양한 담화 양식의 연속체에 대해 이해하고, 이를 활용해 학생들과 상호작용할 수 있어야 한다. 본고에서는 교사가 담화 양식을 이동하며 언어 형태와 교과 내용에 초점을 맞추는 데 활용할 수 있는 읽기 활동의 예를 보였다.
