The Korean public schools have faced with several problems due to the college entrance exam system, including abnormal features in the secondary school classrooms. Recently even the Korean colleges and universities have been called as ‘the preparatory schools for finding employment or national exams', contrary to their essential goals and proper functions. It may not be a wrong apprehension that these out-of-ordinary public education have resulted in the current conflicts, confrontations and discords swollen out from several fields of the Korean society.
The paper suggests an application of the learning community programs for the Korean colleges as one of the strategies for carrying out their roles of educational systems to provide knowledge and foundation for lifelong learning. It introduces the concept and the characteristics of the learning community. It also analyzes the effectiveness of the learning community in the aspects of teachers as well as learners from the results of the case reports and experimental research. A majority of the learning community programs in the analyses reported the positive effects for both learners and teachers. According to the results of the analysis, three types of learning community programs were suggested to apply into the Korean college classrooms as following: team-taught, linked-courses, and team-project learning community. In conclusion, the paper discusses the expectations of these learning community programs, focusing on the students' contribution to the society by those who have experienced the programs during their college days.

최근 국내 대학은 대학입시제도의 잦은 변동과 학력평준화 및 중등학교교육 정상화를 표방한 일부 교육정책의 부실과 실패로 초래된 기초학력 미비 현상 등으로 전공교육은 물론 기초교양과목의 정상적 교육이 어려울 정도로 학생 교육에 어려움을 겪고 있다. 또한 사회 전반적인 구조에서 야기된 이공계 기피 혹은 인문사회분야의 교양과목 수강 기피, 대학의 고시학원화 등의 문제는 이런 상황을 더욱 어렵게 하고 있는 듯하다. 이 글에서는 대학이 졸업 후 취직을 위한 준비학원이 아닌 학문 연구 및 평생학습의 기초를 제공하여 건강한 사회구성원 양육을 위한 성인교육의 첫 번째 준비 장소라는 본연의 역할을 다할 수 있는 하나의 방안을 제시하고자 한다. 그것은 대학에서 학생들이 학습공동체(learning community)를 경험할 수 있도록 하자는 것이다. 기존의 내용교육(content)의 틀은 유지하면서, 학습공동체 프로그램을 통해 지속적으로 자기계발을 도모하는 평생학습자와 사회 및 국가의 공동의 목표를 원만하게 수행하는 사회구성원으로서의 핵심 역량을 배양할 수 있는 기회를 제공하자는 것이다. 이러한 목적을 위해, 먼저 학습공동체와 관련된 기존의 연구와 문헌을 이용해 학습공동체의 정의와 특성을 간략하게 소개하겠다. 다음으로 이러한 이론과 아이디어들이 실제 대학에서 활용된 사례나 경험들을 토대로 국내 대학에서 적용할 수 있는 구체적인 방안을 제시해 보겠다. 마지막으로 학습공동체의 활용을 통해 국내 대학의 강의실이 학습공동체 프로그램의 활용을 통해 좀 더 활기차게 변화하고, 이러한 학생들의 경험이 강의실 밖의 사회활동에서 실제 적용될 수 있는 기대효과를 논의하면서 글을 맺고자 한다.
