The purpose of this study was to understand self-directed learning
process of middle class housewife adults. In this regard, the study focused
on how they began to do self-directed learning projects in their specific life
context, what kinds of learning events were happened and proceeded, and
how the learning results were reflected on their life and development as
adults. The informants of this study were 5 middle class housewives who
graduated from college and lived in Incheon. The semi-structured and
in-depth interviews were conducted to respective informant and the results
were shown to have such characteristics of self-directed learning activity
as learning motivation, learning focus, learning resources, learning
systemization, and learning environmental coordination.

이 연구는 성인학습자로서 중산층 전업주부의 자기주도적 학습 과정의 핵심적 특성을
이해하는 데 목적이 있다. 구체적으로 중산층 전업주부들의 학습이 그들 삶의 전체적 맥락
속에서 어떻게 주체적으로 시작되고, 어떠한 실천의 과정을 거치는지, 이러한 자기주도적
학습의 결과는 그들의 삶에 어떻게 재투영 됨으로써 성인발달을 돕는가를 알아보기 위하여
질적 연구 방법을 활용하였다. 연구의 참여자들은 인천시에 거주하는 4년제 대학졸업 학력
의 40대 중산층 전업주부들이다. 자료의 수집은 반구조화된 질문지에 의한 개별적 심층면
담을 통해 진행되었으며, 수집된 자료는 항상적 비교분석방법을 적용하여 연구자들에 의해
분석되었다. 연구의 결과 이들 중산층 전업주부들의 자기주도적 학습 과정의 특성은 학습
의 동인, 학습의 초점, 학습자원의 활용, 학습활동의 체계적 조직화, 학습상황의 조절, 학습
의 촉진제 등으로 분류되었으며, 자기주도적 학습 과정 특성들은 학습의 촉진제에 의해 상
호보완적으로 영향을 주고받고 있었다.
