This paper is aimed at analyzing the impacts of outward foreign direct investment on employment of SME parent company in Korea. To this end, we utilized difference-in-difference estimator and propensity score matching method to compare employment before and after foreign investment with that of non-foreign investment firms. Based on small-and-medium sized enterprises data from 2000 to 2009, we find evidence that employment of parent company has been increased over a long span of time, even though decreasing at one year after investment. That is, it seems to be substitution relation between outward foreign investment and domestic employment in the short run and complementary relation in the long run. Second, in case of SME in Korea, the more sales amount and management costs, the higher overseas investment probability.

해외직접투자가 자국내 고용에 미치는 영향에 대해 분석한 문헌은 다양한 실증결과들을 보고하고 있다. 국내의 경우 해외직접투자의 국내고용 효과에 대한 분석은 미진한 실정이다. 이 에 본 논문은 기업수준 자료를 이용한 이중차감추정법을 통해 한국 중소기업의 해외직접투자가 모회사 고용에 미치는 영향을 평가하였다.
실증분석 결과 비록 통계적으로 유의하지는 않았지만 대체로 해외투자는 투자 1년 후 모회 사의 고용을 대체하였고 이후 시간이 지남에 따라 고용을 보완하는 것으로 나타났다. 특히 중국에 투자한 기업은 비투자기업에 비해 투자 2년 이후에 고용이 증가하였다. 해외투자가 단기적으로는 국내고용을 감소시킬 지라도 중장기적으로 모회사와 자회사간 서비스의 증가를 초 래한다면 국내 고용에 긍정적인 영향을 미칠 수 있음을 시사한다.
