This study reviews the issue of art shown in the novel by the ethnic Korean writer Mikhail Park, where the protagonist is an artist who has a unique consciousness of art. Mikhail Park is a painter and novelist. His novels repeatedly feature artists such as painters, poets and photographers. The point of note is that when the painter Mikhail Park creates a painting, he does not portray the negative reality. In the same manner, the painters and photographers who are protagonists in his novels do not portray the negative reality in their art work. Just as the author Mikhail Park depicts the conflict between the world and the individual, the poet in his novel, too, represents a conflict between the negative reality and various forms of life. Such a contrast in the attitude of Mikhail Park in how he approaches paintings and writing is proved through the artistic world of the artist protagonists in his novels. This study reviewed this topic using two perspectives – one focusing on the visual art and one focusing on the literary art. This study that reviews the novels of Mikhail Park and the author himself is meaningful in that it shed light on the painter and novelist Mikhail Park in a comprehensive manner. It is also meaningful in that it expands the breadth of studies that have thus far focused on his identity stemming only from being an ethnic Korean.

이 연구는 고려인 작가 박미하일의 소설 중에서 예술가인 주인공이 등장하여 예술에 대한 ‘고유한 의식’을 나타낸 소설을 중심으로 예술의 문제에 대하여 살펴본 연구이다. 박미하일은 화가이자 소설가로서 그의 소설에는 화가와 시인, 사진작가라는 예술을 하는 주인공들이 반복적으로 등장하고 있다. 여기에서 주목해 볼 점은 화가 박미하일이 그림을 그릴 때 부정적인 현실을 그림으로 그리고 있지 않는 것처럼 소설 속 주인공인 화가와 사진작가 또한 그들의 작품인 ‘그림/사진’에 부정적인 현실을 담고 있지 않으며, 또한 작가 박미하일이 소설을 통해 세계와 개인의 갈등을 드러내고 있는 것처럼 소설 속에 등장하는 시인 역시 그의 ‘시’ 속에 부정적인 현실과 삶의 여러 형태를 드러내고 있다는 점이다. 이러한 박미하일의 그림과 글을 대하는 상이한 태도는 그의 소설 속에 등장하는 예술가들의 예술 세계를 통해 확증된다. 이를 ‘시각 예술’과 ‘언어 예술’에 대한 작가의 두 가지 접근 방식으로 구분하여 살펴보았다. 박미하일과 그의 소설을 예술의 측면에서 살펴본 이와 같은 연구는 화가이자 소설가인 박미하일을 총체적으로 규명할 수 있다는 점에서 의의를 지니며 ‘고려인’이라는 민족의 문제에 집중되어 있던 그동안의 연구의 폭을 넓힐 수 있다는 점에서 의미가 있다고 할 수 있다.
