The controversies that surround teaching a novel, Jiyoung Kim Born in 1982 are related to how to choose and teach counter-narratives in classrooms. Based on the analysis of the literature, this paper discusses how to choose and teach counter-narratives to young students. Bamberg’s small narrative concepts are employed as a theoretical background and Labov’s and Riessman’s narrative analysis methods are used as research methods. The literature describes the disparity among characters according to their socioeconomic class and gender. The exclusion of male readers from the literature field is noticeable. The practices to treat people deferentially according to their gender still remain. Based on these findings, the followings are suggested: First, counter-narratives must be selected based on their possibility to teach diverse modes of discrimination; second, teachers must assist students to break narratives into small narratives. Teachers also have to help students analyze counter-narratives from theoretical perspectives, which they learned in social studies courses.

이 연구는 카운터 내러티브 선정 기준 및 교수학습 방법을 탐색한 연구이다. 이를 위해 소설 『82년생 김 지영』과 관련된 논란을 분석하였다. Bamberg의 작은 내러티브 이론, Labov의 내러티브 구조 분석과 Riessman 의 내러티브 수행 분석이 이론적 배경과 연구 방법으로 사용되었다. 그 결과 텍스트 수준에서는 젠더 뿐 아니 라 계층 차이가 두드러졌다. 사회적 차원에서는 젠더 차별의 존재가 확인되었으나 이와 함께 도서 시장에서의 남성 소비자에 대한 배제 역시 발견되었다. 사회과 교사는 학생들이 내러티브를 작게 나누어 젠더 외의 여러 사회적 차별을 발견하고 이를 여러 사회과학적 이론을 이용, 다각도로 해석할 수 있도록 안내할 필요가 있다. 또한 다양한 사회적 차별 문제를 함유한 카운터 내러티브를 학생에게 제시할 필요가 있다.
