Mythology is a branch of oral literature and may very possibly be recorded in literary form. It had been evolved along with the development of Chinese literature. Before the era of individual composing, it had long occupied the center of literature. Even inside that era, it is still an important source of contents and imagination for the novel composing, and therefore has an important role. Nowadays this important value still exists. Similar to novel writing, in the production of TV & movie media, mythology and mythological motifs have been adapted and employed in various ways. This fact has a significance to the study of the mythology and mythological motifs as the meta-source for the TV & movie media. Among Chinese novels, A Journey to the West is the most distinctive for its mythological features. It has been adapted to various movies and TV operas, even outside Chinese where there exist cultural differences. Having this novel as the object of study, this essay explores the status quo of the adaptation and employment of mythology, and seeks a model for the employment of mythological sources. It analyses the various occasions of mythological adaption and employment in the movie series of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. It also uses as an example the 2016 TV opera Guardian: The Lonely and Great God, which was highly popular in both China and Korea, compares its adaptation and employment of source materials with those in various adaptation of A Journey to the West. It tries to put forward the guidelines for the TV and movie products that are based on the mythological sources. The model of mythological adaptation and employment initiated in this essay will expand the range of mythological adaptation and employment in the production of the well-received TV and movie products. From this point, this essay is important for its implications.

신화는 구비문학의 갈래 가운데 문자로 기록될 가능성을 가장 많이 가지고 있다. 한문학의 발달과 더불어 개인 창작시대가 열리기까지 신화는 문학의 중심적인 자리를 지켜왔으며, 그 이후에도 소설 창작의 소재적 원천으로 중요한 요소가 되었다. 이러한 신화의 가치는 현재까 지 이어져 소설 창작은 물론 영상콘텐츠 제작에 있어 신화와 신화적 모티프는 다양하게 변용, 활용되고 있다. 이런 점에서 영상콘텐츠의 소재적인 원천으로서의 신화와 신화적 모티프의 변 용과 활용에 관한 연구는 그 의의를 확보할 수 있을 것이다. 그러한 점에서 중국의 4대기서로 알려진 『서유기』가 주목된다. 중국 명나라 때 나온 장편 神怪소설로 작가는 吳承恩 이며, 大唐 황제의 칙명으로 불경을 구하러 인도에 가는 玄.三藏 과 그 從者인 孫悟空이 주인공이다. 신괴적인 요소를 넣는 동시에 상당한 로맨티시즘과 환상 적 분위기가 들어가 있는 이 작품은 중국 소설 중 신화적 요소가 가장 두드러진다. 그렇기 때문에 일찍부터 다양한 영상콘텐츠로 변용되어 제작되었으며, 아울러 문화를 달리하는 여러 나라에서도 이를 창작소스로 활용한 작품이 많이 등장했다. 본고는 이러한 점을 감안하여 서 유기의 변용과 활용의 양상을 살펴 신화적 소스가 어떻게 변용되었고 그 구체적 활용 방안을 모색하는 데 연구의 목적을 두었다. 이를 위해 본고에서는 먼저 그동안 중국에서 제작된 서 유기 작품을 통해 신화의 변용과 활용의 양상을 살피고, 또 다른 나라에서 영화, 드라마, 애 니메이션 등으로 다양하게 제작된 작품들도 아울러 검토하여 여기서 드러난 문제점을 통해 앞으로 신화적 소스를 가진 중국 산문작품에 있어서 그 원전의 활용과 변용을 할 때 유의할 점이 무엇이며, 구체적으로 어떻게 할 것인가 하는 방안을 제시하는 것을 본 연구의 목적으로 하였다. 이렇게 얻어진 결과는 앞으로 영상콘텐츠 제작에 있어 신화와 신화적 소스의 변용과 활용 영역을 넓힐 수 있을 것이라는 점에서 의미를 가진다고 할 수 있을 것이다.
