Kim Il-myeon’s Emperor's Army and Korean Comfort Women and Park Yu-ha's Imperial Comfort Women are very similar texts, despite the time difference of about 40 years. Both of them excerpts and quotes novels by a male writer Tamura who was a former Japanese soldier depicting a “Korean comfort woman” based on his battlefield experiences treating them as historical facts and testimonies. On the other hand, both texts citing the novel Shupu-den depicting the romance between Japanese soldiers and “Korean comfort women” reveal conflicting perspectives on “Japanese comfort women” and “Karayukisan.” Park Yu-ha contemplates karayukisan as “hearty daughters,” who sacrificed herself for her family and country, while Kim Il-myeon despises them as “prostitutes,” in contrast to a young, chaste virgin. It is clear that the opposing eyes of praise and despise are finally in the same context in that Kim Il-myeon and Park Yu-ha are forcing death and silence on the “comfort women,” after the war. After all, what is common to both texts is the view of othering women in terms of male aggressors’ desire. From the contradictions and problems that Kim Il-myeon, who denounces colonial rule and Park Yu-ha, who justifies colonial rule, share the same view, we can reflect on the past perception of “comfort women” and suggest future discursive directions.

1947년 소설로 출판된 이래 연극과 영화의 형태로 수차례 재현되고 있는 다무라 다이지로(田村泰次郎)의 『춘부전(春婦伝)』은 전후일본의 대표적인 ‘조선인 위안부’ 표상이다. 이 소설은 재일조선인의 저작으로 1976년 일본에서 출판된 이래 수차례에 걸쳐 한국어로 번역/출판된 김일면의 『천황의 군대와 조선인 위안부(天皇の軍隊と朝鮮人慰安婦)』와 2013년에 한국에서 출판되어 이듬해 일본어로 번역된 책으로 한일 양국사회에 큰 파장을 불러온 박유하의 『제국의 위안부』라는, 약 40년의 시간차를 두고 쓰여진 ‘조선인 위안부’ 관련 텍스트에서 공통적으로 인용되고 있다. 제 2차 세계대전 당시의 ‘조선인 위안부’를 그려냄으로써 한일 양 사회에 ‘위안부’ 라는 역사를 알리고 그 다양한 측면을 제시하려 했다는 평가를 받는 이들 텍스트는 모두 자신의 전장경험을 토대로 ‘조선인 위안부’를 그리고 있는 전후일본의 남성작가 다무라의 소설을 마치 역사적 사료처럼 발췌, 인용하고 있다. 전 일본군 병사였던 일본의 전중세대 남성주체가 픽션의 형태로 묘사하는 ‘조선인 위안부’’에 구제국의 가해자측 남성이 피해자에게 투영하는 타자표상의 한계가 보인다고 할 때, 두 텍스트 전반에 걸쳐진 남성적 시선으로부터 그 한계까지도 공유되고 있음을 알 수 있다. 같은 소설을 같은 방식으로 인용하는 두 텍스트에는 모두 여성을 남성의 성적욕구를 만족시키는 존재로 대상화/타자화하는 시선이 드러나고 있는 것이다. 식민지지배를 규탄하는 김일면의 저작이 이를 정당화하는 박유하의 텍스트와 같은 시선을 공유하고 있는데서 오는 모순과 문제점으로부터 우리는 ‘위안부’를 향한 과거의 인식을 반성하고 여기에서 일본군 ‘위안부’ 문제에 대한 앞으로의 시사점을 읽어낼 수 있을 것이다.
