The purpose of this paper is to compare and analyze the birth and status of English education in Korea and Japan clearly. Korea and Japan are countries of the EFL environment located in East Asia. They are very close to English education as neighboring countries. Since the language structures of Korea and Japan are similar, they will use similar methods to learn and acquire other languages. For English, both Korea and Japan were not readily acceptable languages in the early days. However, as Japan accepted more advanced cultures than Korea, there were many Japanese who went to study in England because they were interested in English. In Korea, English education can be divided into four sections. The first is the generator from 1883 to 1895. The second period is from early 1895 to 1911. The third period is stagnant from 1911 to 1945. Finally, the fourth period was a period of rebirth from 1945 to today. Japan has inevitably embraced English in order to accept British English earlier than American English and to accept globalization and advanced culture. There are two main trends in English education in Japan. One is ‘English Literature’ education through school education in the 1910s, and the other is ‘Conversation in English’ education through broadcasting media in the 1930s. The background of English education in Korea and Japan is different, but as a country adjacent to EFL environment. In the future, Korea and Japan be able to coexist with each other in English education.

본 논문에서는 한국과 일본의 영어교육의 시작과 현황을 전반적으로 살펴보 고 이를 통해서 두 나라의 영어교육에 대한 인식을 제고해 보고자 하는 데에 목적이 있다. 결정적으로 한국에서 영어에 대한 인식이 극대화 된 것은 종교 활동이 자유로워진 한미통상조약(1882) 이후이다. 한국은 영어교육을 제4기로 나누어서 살펴 볼 수 있다. 제1기는 생성기로 1883년부터 1895년까지이다. 제2 기는 정초기로 1895년부터 1911년까지이다. 제3기는 정체기로 1911년부터 1945 년까지이다. 그리고 마지막으로 제4기는 중흥기로 1945년부터 오늘날까지이다. 일본은 미국영어보다 영국영어를 더 먼저 받아들이고 세계화, 선진문물을 받 아들이려는 차원에서 불가피하게 영어를 수용하게 되었다. 일본의 영어교육에 는 두 가지 흐름이 있다. 하나는 1910년대에 학교교육을 통한 ‘영문학’(English Literature)교육이고, 다른 하나는 1930년대 방송매체를 통한 ‘영어회 화’(Conversation in English)교육이다. 일본은 영어를 이 두 가지 흐름으로 도 입이 되었는데 그것은 1868년 메이지유신을 거치고 근대화로 발전해 가던 최초 의 30여 년 동안에 일이었다. 영어교육에 대한 시작과 현황에 있어서 한국과 일본은 유사한 점도 있지만 차이점도 많다는 것을 확인 할 수 있다.
