In recent years liberal Arts education and liberal arts colleges have emerged surprising prevalence in European countries. Even though college education based on liberal Arts education started in Europe, since modern times, European universities have focused on fostering experts based on majors, putting college liberal education on the back burner. Although college education is conducted on the premise of liberal Arts education in the European secondary school, it is noteworthy that liberal arts colleges are once again emerging in Europe. In this article, we briefly examined how liberal arts education works at universities in major European countries, and actually analysed several types of European liberal arts colleges, which occurred before and after the Bologna process. In conclusion, we interpreted Europe's new liberal arts movements as "Back to the Basics" and "Diversity." By comparing and reviewing the cases in Europe, we have drawn suggestions that can be given to the direction of liberal arts education in Korean Universities.

미국 대학의 전통으로 뿌리내려온 리버럴아츠 대학(LAC)에 대한 관심과 출현이 유럽 에서도 심상치 않게 감지되고 있다. 자유학예교육을 기반으로 하는 대학교육이 유럽에 서 시작되었음에도 불구하고 근대 이후 유럽대학은 전공 위주의 전문가 양성에 치중함 으로써 대학 교양교육은 뒷전으로 밀리게 되었다. 고등교육 이전의 교양교육을 전제로 대학의 전공교육이 이루어지는 유럽 특유의 지적 토양이 있기는 하지만 유럽에서 다시 금 리버럴아츠 대학이 새롭게 부각되고 있는 점은 주목할 만하다. 그 이유는 유럽의 기 원에서 쇠락을 경험한 자유학예교육이 부활하는 독특한 현상을 보이고 있기 때문이다. 이 글에서는 유럽 주요국의 대학에서 교양교육이 어떻게 이루어지는지를 간략하게 살펴 보고, 실제로 볼로냐 프로세스 전후 생겨난 리버럴아츠 대학의 몇 가지 유형을 검토하였 다. 검토 결과 유럽의 새로운 움직임을 ‘근본 회귀 현상’과 ‘다양성’이라는 코드로 해석해 보았다. 유럽의 사례를 비교 검토함으로써 우리나라 교양교육의 방향에 줄 수 있는 시사 점을 도출하였다.
