In case the reunification of the Korean peninsula becomes reality, it is likely that there would be a consideration between liberal education and vocational training as the proper direction of education for establishing social equity, especially with the special consideration of the citizens from the Northern part that is known to be economically weak. The similar debate between African-American theorists, Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. Dubois, can shed an insightful light on the future possible debate in Korea. This articles draws upon the American debate and reflects on the application of such debate to the future Korean case, with the ultimate goal of achieving social equity in the reunified peninsula.

한반도의 통일 이후 고려해야 할 통일통합교육의 방향으로서 교양교육적 성격의 고등 교육과 직업훈련 중심의 실용교육의 두 가지를 고려할 필요가 있다. 특히 해외의 여러 사례에서 볼 수 있듯, 사회경제적으로 취약한 계층의 성장을 위한 교육논의에서 빠지지 않고 등장하는 것이 바로 교양교육과 대학진학을 통한 인간성의 신장인지 아니면 실질적인 직업훈련을 통한 경제력 향상인지에 대한 검토이다. 통일이 되면 지역적으로 취약한 계층이 있을 것으로 예상되는 바, 본고는 취약 지역 학생들의 사회적 지지를 위한 교육의 방향으로서 고등교육과 직업교육에 관한 논쟁을 분석한다. 특히 미국의 흑인 인권 신장을 위한 워싱턴과 두보이스 사이의 교육논쟁을 분석하고, 이러한 논쟁이 통일통합교육에 제공하는 시사점에 대하여 논의한다.
