The oldest, largest and most well-preserved castle in China remains in Xi'an. This study analyzes the distinctive contrast between the inside and outside of the castle, focusing on the speciality of the castle, which enables the coexistence of the new and old while separating the space. Traditional scenes are presented inside the walls, the scenery of modern Xi'an as a strong point for the program of development of Western China exists outside of the walls. The castle itself is of great significance, but the meaning of the castle as a passage to the past and a boundary between the past and the present forms the landscape of Xi'an and presents a roadmap for the development of Xi'an. The castle that is the mediator of communication and plays a central role in urban development is of significance in the process of designing the future of Xi'an.

시안에는 중국에서 가장 오래되고 규모가 크며 보존상태가 양호한 성이 남아 있다. 본 연구는 그 성이 가지 는 특수성, 바로 공간을 분리하면서도 신구의 공존을 가능하게 한다는 점에 주목하여 성벽을 경계로 하여 성 안팎 의 경관이 뚜렷하게 대조되는 양상을 분석한다. 성벽 내부에는 전통적 경관이 나타나고, 성벽 외부에는 서부 대개 발 거점으로서의 현대 시안의 경관이 드러난다. 이 성곽은 그 자체만으로도 큰 의의가 지니지만 과거로의 통로와 과거와 오늘의 경계로서 성곽이 가지는 의미는 시안 도시 경관을 형성하고 시안 개발의 로드맵을 제시한다. 소통의 매개체이자 도시 개발의 중심축 역할을 하는 성곽은 시안의 미래를 구상하는 과정에 있어서 중요하다.
