A Study of Korean-Chinese Translation Strategies in Webtoon Along With the Gods : The Two Worlds.
초록
영어
This paper analyzed translation strategies in the Korean webtoon ‘Along With the Gods: The Two Worlds’ and its Chinese translation based on the ranslation strategies proposed by Celotti (2008) and Kim & Lee(2017). The analysis result showed that the strategies of ‘specification’, ‘deletion’, ‘culturally adapted’ and ‘left untranslated’ were used besides ‘translated’ among the six strategies. These strategies are related with the characteristics of webtoon that conveys a message through a combination of non-verbal and verbal texts, is easy to modify and free from space limit and emphasizes humor. First of all, the strategy of ‘specification’ was observed in three types: specification of the information depicted in non-verbal texts; re-specification of the information that is identifiable in the context; and, specification for humor effect. Second, the strategy of ‘deletion’ was rarely observed as it is easy to revise webtoon. Third, ‘culturally adapted’ was related with humor effect. This strategy was applied to have the same humor effect with the source text. Fourth, the strategy of ‘left untranslated’ was applied to translating all shop names in English of linguistic paratexts and related with humor effect.
