This study examined the different characteristics of ladles made of great green turban shell(yagwangpae, 夜光貝) that were excavated from the North Mound of Hwangnamdaechong Tomb, Cheonmachong Tomb, Geumgwanchong Tomb, and Jisan-dong Tomb No. 44. It compared them with examples excavated from Japanese archaeological sites. The ladles from the ancient Korean tombs above were made from shells of giant sea snails known in Japanese as yakogai(ヤコウガイ), which were widely used for decorating sculptures and mother-of-pearl lacquerware. Since giant sea snails live around the Okinawa Islands in Japan and in coral reef areas in tropical seas of the western Pacific and Indian Oceans, the ladles must have been made using imported materials and therefore offer a glimpse into the exchanges with Japan at the time. Japanese ladles generally have carved decorations on the handles, while most Korean versions have gilt-bronze rims that have no parallel among the extant contemporaneous examples excavated in Japan. The metal rims were fixed to the shells using rivets or by overlapping with each other. A ladle from Jisan-dong Tomb No. 44 had no rim at all. As all the ladles were excavated in a damaged state, their forms are incomplete. This study reproduced a complete ladle in a projected shape to identify major features of the excavated ladles in their original shapes.

본 조사 연구에서는 황남대총 북분, 천마총, 지산동 44호분에서 출토된 야광조개 국자를 비교 조사하여 차이점을 알아보고 일본에서 출토된 야광조개국자와 비교하 였다. 야광조개국자를 만든 재료로 사용되는 조개는 야광조개(ヤコウガイ)로 조각 품 및 나전칠기의 재료로 많이 사용하였다. 분포지역으로 일본에서는 오키나와제 도, 서태평양과 인도양 열대해역의 산호초 지역에서 서식하는 대형 고둥이다. 따라서 수입품으로서의 당시 일본과의 교역관계를 알 수 있는 중요한 출토품이다. 야광 조개국자는 일본의 경우 손잡이 부분을 조각하여 장식성을 준 반면 한국은 주로 금 속테두리 장식을 사용하였다. 금속 테두리를 장식으로 사용한 야광조개국자는 같 은 시기 일본에서는 아직 출토된 예가 없다. 야광조개국자의 금속 테두리의 결합방 법은 리벳을 사용한 방법, 금속끼리 서로 겹쳐 결합한 방법, 금속 테두리를 사용하 지 않은 방법 등이 있다. 현재까지 발견된 출토품은 모두 파손편으로 그 형태가 불 완전하여, 원형을 유추하고 복원․제작하여 당시 유물의 모습을 확인해 보고자 하 였다.
