This article aims to understand the mutation of Trouville-sur-mer, from a small fishing village to one of the best resorts in Normandy from the nineteenth century to the early twentieth century. This change reveals the unprecedented form of appropriating beach and the influence of the urban and modern culture on the birth of a place of recreation. Trouville-sur-mer has grown, welcoming bathers and vacationers, Parisian elite. The latter has sought not only therapeutic sea baths, but also leisure activities that resemble those of Paris. To meet the demand, Trouville-sur-mer has equipped itself with the bathing establishment, the casino, the Grand Hotels, the theater, the promenade, etc. The active organization of recreational sports competitions from the end of the 19th century also reflects responses that the seaside resort has given at the request of Parisian customers who want to accentuate the elitist leisure. In sum, the Trouville-sur-Mer beach has been a concentrated place of a life of urban and modern recreation and sociability in the maritime nature.

본 논문은 대서양을 인접한 프랑스 노르망디 지역의 트루빌이 19세기 동안 작은 어촌 마을에서 지역 최고의 해변휴양지로 변모해 가는 과정을 분석함으로서, 해변을 전유하 는 근대적인 방식을 드러내고 그 등장의 이면에 작동하고 있는 원리를 규명하고자 했다. 트루빌은 파리 상류층을 휴양객으로 맞이하면서 휴양도시로 성장했다. 파리 엘리트들 이 트루빌에 요구했던 것은 치료를 위한 해수욕과 더불어 자신들이 파리에서 영위하던 도시적 여가와 사교생활이었다. 이에 부응하기 위해 트루빌은 카지노, 호텔, 극장, 산책 로 등 편의시설과 유흥시설, 사교장을 조성하는데 주력했다. 세기말로 갈수록 해안의 의학적인 기능보다 즐거움을 위한 기능이 더욱 강화되었다. 19세기 말부터 트루빌에서 근대 여가스포츠가 발전하는 것 역시 이러한 도시엘리트들의 요구에 대한 응답이었다. 한마디로 트루빌 해수욕장은 해양환경 속에 도시의 여가·사교생활을 응축시켜 전이 해 놓은 것이었다. 이러한 트루빌의 변화는 해변휴양이 근대도시문화와 가지는 이중적인 관계를 보여준다. 해변휴양은 도시의 일상과 단절된 자연환경 속에서 치료와 건강을 위 한 시간이었지만 동시에 근대 도시문화가 이식되고 발현되는 시간이기도 했던 것이다. 이렇게 19세기 프랑스에서 탄생한 해변휴양은 해양공간과 시간의 재구성에 근대도시문 화의 개입을 관찰할 수 있는 좋은 관찰 장소다.
