The purpose of this study was to devise reading lesson plans by applying extensive reading and Co-op Co-op to help learners with an academic purpose improve their reading abilities in Korean. In current Korean education, reading education mainly offers integrated lessons combining vocabulary, grammar, speaking, writing, and other linguistic abilities through intensive reading. Learners with an academic purpose, however, seek after the understanding and analysis of given texts and the manifestation of critical and creative thinking based on them. Targeting them, reading education in Korean should embrace mutually supplementary relations between intensive and extensive reading, help them increase their knowledge about the target language and communication skills, and pursue the values of accuracy and fluency. Extensive reading allows learners to make a choice of what they want to read themselves and read as many materials as possible. Many researches demonstrated that extensive reading education in second language teaching increased the vocabulary, reading speed, and comprehension of learners and brought positive changes to their reading attitudes. The present study thus devised a stage of extensive reading lessons based on Co-op Co-op whose premises were autonomous participation and decision making of learners. The investigator first selected various interesting major topics for Co-op Co-op, formed small groups for reading activities, and then selected specific subtopics, which was followed by the choice of materials that were easy for learners to read and the implementation of extensive reading activities. After a presentation of each small group for the entire students to share the reading products, an assessment of academic achievements was performed based on mutual evaluation. The learning results were also put on display to motivate the learners to read. Going through those steps, the educational effects of extensive reading would increase further.

이 연구는 확장형 읽기와 자율적 협력학습(Co-op Co-op)을 통해 학문목적 한국어 학습자의 읽기 능력 향상을 위한 교수방안을 모색하는 데 그 목적이 있다. 현재 한국어 읽기 교육은 주로 집중적 읽기를 통해 어휘, 문법, 말하기, 쓰기 및 기타 언어 능력을 결합한 통합 수업이 중심이다. 그러나 학업 목적을 가진 학습자는 주어진 텍스트에 대한 이해와 분석, 그리고 그에 기반한 비판적이고 창의적인 사고의 표현이 요구된다. 이러한 목표를 위해 한국어 읽기 교육은 집중형 읽기와 확장형 읽기 사이에 보완적인 관계를 유지하고 목표 언어 및 의사소통 능력을 향상 시키며 정확성과 유창성을 추구해야 한다. 확장형 읽기를 통해 학습자는 스스로 읽고 싶은 것을 선택할 수 있고 가능한 한 많은 자료를 읽을 수 있다. 국내외 다수의 연구 결과에 따르면 제 2언어 교육에서 확장형 읽기교육이 학습자들의 어휘력, 독서 속도 및 이해력을 높이고 독서 태도에 긍정적인 변화를 가져다 준 것으로 나타났다. 이에 본 연구는 자율적 협력학습(Co-op Co-op)에 기반한 확장형 읽기 수업을 구안하였다. 자율적 협력학습의 전제는 학습자의 자율 참여와 의사 결정이다. 이를 위해 다양하고 흥미로운 주제를 먼저 선택하고, 읽기 활동을 위한 소그룹을 구성한 다음 특정 하위주제를 정한 후 확장형 읽기 수행을 위한 쉬운 읽기 자료를 선정한다. 소그룹의 읽기 활동 결과물은 전체 학생이 공유할 수 있도록 소그룹별로 발표를 진행한 후 상호평가를 기준으로 학업 성취도를 평가한다. 학습의 결과물을 전시함으로써 학습자들에게 읽기 학습의 성취감과 동기부여 효과도 거둘 수 있다.
