The purpose of this study was to conduct a qualitative research on which programs provided by the city A Multicultural Family Support Center that the mothers of multicultural families living in city A have participated in, how those programs are helping them, and the ways to improve them. Six mothers with experience with the programs were selected for in-depth interviews, and the results were as following: First, the programs were helpful because they provided a chance to not only learn how to nurture their children but also to meet other parents and exchange various information. Second, many mothers were having trouble with the daily notices and announcements from school due to the language barrier. It would be desirable to incorporate material that help understand the daily notices and announcements into the Korean language courses for the parents. Third, the mothers were highly interested in their children’s self-esteem and personality education, and hoped they were integrated into the programs provided by the Support Center. Also, they hoped that the programs provide chinese character education and for experience-oriented programs such as club activities that are not provided in schools. Reflecting such results of this study into the programs provided by local institutions would be a great help for the parents and children of multicultural families.

본 연구에서는 A시에 거주하는 다문화가정 어머니들이 A시 다문화가족지원센터에서 다문화가정을 위해 제공하는 어떤 프로그램에 참여한 경험이 있으며, 이 프로그램들이 참여자들에게 어떤 도움이 되고 있는지, 그리고 앞으로 프로그램의 개선책은 무엇인지 등을 질적 연구를 통해 살펴보고자 하였다. 이를 위해 상기 센터에서 운영하고 있는프로그램에 참여한 경험이 있는 다문화가정 어머니 6명을 선정하여 심층면담을 실시하였으며, 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 다문화가정 어머니들은 센터 프로그램에 참여하면서 자녀의 양육방법을 배웠을 뿐만 아니라, 여러 학부모들을 만나 다양한 정보를 교환할 수 있어서 유익하였다고하였다. 둘째, 다문화가정 어머니들은 언어적인 문제로 학교에서 매일 나누어주는 가정통신문이나 알림장의 내용을 이해하는데 어려움을 경험하고 있었다. 다문화가정 부모를 위한 한국어 프로그램에 자녀의 가정통신문이나 알림장 등을 이해하는데 도움이 되는 교육내용이 반영되는 것이 바람직하겠다. 셋째, 다문화가정 어머니들은 자녀들의 자아존중감이나 인성교육에 관심이 많았으며, 센터에서 제공하는 프로그램에 이러한 교육을 반영해 주기를 희망하였다. 또한 학교교육에 포함되지 않고 있는 한자교육과 아울러 동아리 활동과 같은 체험 프로그램을 많이 제공해 주기를 희망하였다. 이상의 연구 결과가 지역 센터에서 제공하고 있는 프로그램에 반영된다면 다문화가정 부모 및 아동들에게 도움이 될 것으로 사료된다.
