The issue of how to define spirituality is a hard task even for faithful Christians who believe in the fact that the grace of God should be the precondition for human salvation. While it is due to the fact that spirituality ask people to do some active efforts and the process of formation through a deeply religious acknowledgement or meaningful meditation, it also presupposes a divine nature of God which is beyond both human understanding and experience. From this paradoxical situation, this study starts for the purpose of approaching to such dilemma in regards to Christian spirituality and it will explore a brief historical flow, which reflects the experiential feature of spirituality, before John Wesley to clarify his contributions on the issue. However, such understanding of this study about Christian spirituality is not to argue either the possibility of human salvation by human’s own effort or the abolition of Christian tradition that considers the matter of sin in relation to salvation. On the contrary, the concept of spirituality in this study aims to expand its value into the wider category including various areas of human lives beyond a narrow area within religious realm. This academic stance is based on the scripture which describes that God is involved in human history and God’s activities has been evolved throughout diverse human cultures. By this logical process, there is a solid expectation that this type of methodology for Christian spirituality can be a medium to provide animated vitality for Christian churches as well as a good reason for the return of the churches into their own responsibilities in the society.

초월적 하나님의 은혜가 인간 구원의 당연한 전제 조건임을 표명하는 기독교인들에게조차 영성은 종종 난감한 개념으로 다가온다. 영성은 깨달음과 훈련의 과정을 적극적으로 추구하는 인간 노력과 인류 문화와 역사 속에서는 그 실체를 구현하기 불가능한 초월적 신성(神性)의 역설적 결합을 지향하기 때문이다. 본 연구는 이런 논리적 역설에 기반을 둔 신학적 고민에 접근하기 위한 의도로 기획되었으며, 플라톤과 아리스토텔레스를 중심으로 형성된 그리스 철학과 고대 유대교 묵시사상, 초대교회의 신비주의와 12세기 도미니크 수도 공동체 그리고 종교개혁자 들의 다양한 시대적 맥락과 틸리히를 포함한 20세기의 신학자들의 주장 등을 통해 초월적 속성으로 규정되는 영성 이해와 역사적 상황 사이의 논쟁을 개략적으로 먼저 살펴본다. 이런 일련의 과정들은 다양한 전통들을 하나의 융합된 전통으로 창출한 웨슬리의 삶과 영성을 통해 잠정적인 결론에 도달하는 과정으로 귀결된다. 그러나 웨슬리가 이분법적 사유를 배격한 여러 전통들을 효율적으로 규합했다는 신학 명제는 인간의 공로로 구원을 획득할 수 있다거나 죄를 중요한 구원의 충분조건으로 설정한 기독교 전통의 폐기를 의미하지 않는다. 오히려 웨슬리를 조명하는 논리적 전개과정을 통해 본 연구가 추구하는 웨슬리처럼 내면의 사유로 제한될 수 있는 기독교 영성의 가치와 하나님의 현존 범위를 인간 삶 전반으로 확장하는 적극적 노력을 지향한다. 이는 영성의 근거인 성경이 하나님의 창조와 다양한 참여 활동 이야기들을 기술하고 있다는 점에 근거하는 동시에 웨슬리를 포함한 기독교 신학의 위대한 선각자들 다수가 이런 의견에 동의한다는 연구결과에 바탕을 둔다. 뿐만 아니라 이런 학문적 전개과정은 실천신학의 성격에 부합하도록 현대사회에서의 용도를 진지하게 고민하는 기재로 삼는다. 세속화와 다원주의, 인구급감과 노령화 같은 사회적 위기로 인해 활력을 상실한 한국 기독교인들에게 영성의 올바른 가치와 의미를 공급하는 동시에 교회로 하여금 본연의 사명으로 귀환할 이유와 명분을 제공할 동기를 부여하는 작업은 실제적인 실천신학의 발전을 위한 기폭제로써 매우 중요한 역할을 수행하는 까닭이다.
