The purpose of this essay is to examine the meaning of Japanese aesthetic representations like mono-no-aware(物の哀れ) in Peter Greenaway’s Pillow Book, approaching through Lacanian psychoanalysis. In so doing, I will apply psychoanalysistic concepts such as desire for writing, writing in the “Imaginary”, writing in the “Symbolic”, writing in the “Real”, writing of Eros, writing of Tanatos, and writing of Jouissance to the interpretation of Pillow Book. Then, special attention will be paid to the writing of mono-no-aware as the writing of Jouissance contains the transition from phallic jouissance to feminine jouissance. In conclusion, this essay will show the psychoanalysistic meaning of Japan=objet petit a, while relating the various Japanese representations in Pillow Book with some concepts of Nihonjin-ron(日本文化論).

본고의 목적은 피터 그리너웨이 <필로우북>의 중심주제인 ‘글쓰기’에 대한 정신분석학적 접근을 통해 궁극적으로 ‘모노노아와레’(物の哀れ)를 비롯한 미학적인 일본표상의 특징을 규명하는 데에 있다. 이를 위해 본고는 글쓰기의 욕망, 상상계의 글쓰기, 상징계의 글쓰기, 실재계의 글쓰기, 에로스의 글쓰기, 타나토스의 글쓰기, 주이상스의 글쓰기 등을 설정하여 <필로우북>에 대한 정신분석학적 접근을 시도할 것이다. 이때 주이상스의 글쓰기는 결국 팔루스적 주이상스에서 여성적 주이상스로의 전이 과정에서 모노노아와레의 글쓰기와 접속된다는 점을 주장하고자 한다. 본고는 여기서 더 나아가 <필로우북>에 나타난 다양한 일본 표상들을 일본문화론적 개념과 연관시키면서, 결론적으로 일본이라는 대상a가 가지는 정신분석학적 의미를 제시할 것이다.
