The current study pointed out that a multicultural phenomenon is not unique in Korea, but a global trend. We may face national difficulties unless we accurately understand the multicultural phenomenon and cope with it under the circumstances as a unitary state and divided country at the same time. From this point of view, the study examined excellent aspects of a multicultural or a cultural pluralistic viewpoint rather than a assimilation viewpoint in many ways. It is anticipated that 20% of the entire children will be from multicultural families by 2020. In this trend, the study examined what multicultural families have to do, and efforts the nation should make in terms of education in order have children of multicultural families live a pride as a Korean. Currently, Korea's policies about multicultural families still focus on compensative education and reinforcement of adaptability. Therefore, the study examined effective measures schools and teachers should take for the future and proposed several developmental suggestions.

본고에서는 한국의 다문화 현상이 우리나라만의 고유한 현상이 아니라 세계적인 추세임을 지적하였다. 단 일민족과 국가라는 분단국가의 현실속에서 우리가 처한 다문화현상을 정확하게 이해하고 대처하지 못할 경우 국가적 어려움에 직면할 수도 있을 것이다. 이런 점에서 동화주의적(assimilation) 관점보다는 다문 화적 혹은 문화다원주의적(multicultural, cultrual pluralistic) 관점이 갖는 우수성에 대하여 다양한 측면 에서 논의해 보았다. 2020년이 되면 전체 아동의 20%가 다문화가정의 아동이 될 것이라는 전망이 우세 하다. 이런 추세속에서 다문화가정이 해야 할 일과 다문화가정의 아동들이 한국인으로서 자긍심을 갖고 살 수 있기 위해서 국가가 교육적인 측면에서 어떤 노력을 더 많이 기울여야 할지를 모색하였다. 현재 우 리나라의 다문화가정에 대한 대응수준은 보상적 교육 수준과 적응력 강화에 초점을 맞추고 있다. 그러므 로 단위학교와 교사들이 미래를 위해 무엇을 어떻게 하는 것이 더욱 효과적인 것인지를 알아보았으며, 발 전적인 방향의 제시를 위해서 몇 가지 제안을 하였다.
