This study aims to comprehensively review the teaching and learning strategies of the social studies to understand capitalism based on the historical process of Korean society, focusing on practical cases of the strategies and the resulting educational effects. For the purpose, a basic study was firstly conducted on the formation of capitalism in the early stage of modern Korea and on some figures who contributed to the formation process, based on which a teaching and learning strategy was established after conducting an additional in-depth study on the figures who influenced the formation of Korean early capitalism. In particular, in this study integrated lessons for understanding of Korean capitalism were developed which combine social studies with history, based on which class room activities were conducted. The study also examined the effects of the classroom activities on students’ understanding of Korean capitalism by evaluating their participation in the activities with the teaching and learning strategies applied, by using an empirical analysis method, called ‘lived experience study,’ one of qualitative researches, where the students were to fill out a self-reflection paper, which served as a main source for interpretation. As a result, it was found that the students could relate to the somewhat abstract contents of capitalism more personally and concretely through the classroom activities that included materials of modern capitalists in Korea. Particularly, It was noted that the lesson plans, the classroom activities, and the reflective thinking session could lead to reconstruction and promotion of the learner’s perception and a value attitude of capitalism. This study has significance in that social inquiry and understanding of Korean early capitalism focusing on cases of historical figures have been turned into concrete classroom activities of social studies, which has rarely been tried in social studies, and in that necessity of improving educational contents and methodology and a plan for the improvement have been suggested.

본 연구는 한국 사회의 자본주의의 역사적 과정에 대한 탐구를 바탕으로 한 자본주의 이해를 위한 사회과 교수·학습 전략을 실천 사례와 그에 따른 교육 효과를 종합적으로 고찰하고자 하였다. 따라서 본 연 구는 문헌연구를 통해 한국 초기 자본주의 형성 과정과 그 과정에 기여한 인물들에 대한 기본 내용을 정리한 다음, 이를 기초로 한국 초기 자본주의 형성에 영향을 미친 인물들에 대한 탐구(인물학습)를 바탕으로 사회 과 교수·학습 전략을 수립하였다. 특히 본 연구에서는 한국 자본주의의 이해를 주제로 하는 일반사회 수업 과 역사 수업을 결합한 통합 수업안을 구성하고 이를 기초로 수업활동을 실행하였다. 또한 본 연구는 이러한 교수·학습 전략이 적용된 수업활동이 학생들이 한국의 자본주의를 이해하는데 어떤 효과를 가져 오는지를 고찰하기 위해 질적 연구방법 중 하나인 ‘체험연구’(lived experience research)방법을 적용하여 본 연구를 위한 수업에 참여한 학생들이 자기 성찰지를 스스로 작성하도록 하고, 이를 중점적으로 해석하였다. 그 결과, 한 국의 근대 자본가에 관한 소재를 활용한 수업활동을 통해 자본주의에 관한 추상적 내용을 좀 더 구체화해 볼 수 있는 추체험을 경험하게 되었다. 특히 본 연구에서 설계된 수업안과 그에 따른 수업활동을 통해 학생들이 성찰적 사고 과정을 거쳐 자본주의에 대한 인식과 가치·태도를 재구성하고 정립할 수 있음을 알 수 있었다. 본 연구는 사회수업에서 좀처럼 시도하지 않았던 한국 자본주의에 관한 인물사례 중심의 사회 탐구와 이해 를 사회과수업의 활동으로 구체화했다는 점과 자본주의에 대한 교육의 내용 및 방법 개선의 필요성과 이를 위한 방안을 제시하였다는 점에서 의의를 가진다.
