The purpose of this study was to examine how to use 'narrative' as a way to improve communication skills of nursing students through a liberal arts class. Narrative is a story to describe human behaviors, thoughts, memories, desires, and mentalities and it is a principle to develop knowledge, value, and culture. Narrative is the basis of cognition to learn the process of judgment when conducting communication. It is not a simple application of any judgment or rule to a situation, but rather an imaginative rationality to realistic understanding of the situation. Therefore, narrative thought is a process of thinking to understand reality by organizing past events in a specific form and synthesizing events that are related to each other. This helps students to talk about their experiences in the field and to find out the meanings of specific activities through the process of re-talking. Those are the ability to understand the world through narrative thought, the ability to correctly recognize perceptions, the ability to structure experiences into narrative forms, and the ability to consistently contextualize events. Narrative can be used as a powerful learning mechanism to provide students with opportunities and experiences to improve communication competency and to make up for existing communication education methods.

이 연구의 목적은 교양교육을 통해 간호대학생의 의사소통 능력을 향상시키기 위한 방법으로 ‘내러티브’의 활용 방안에 대해 살펴보는 데 있다. 내러티브는 인간이 자신의 행동, 사고, 기억, 욕 구, 심성 등을 언어로 구조화하여 표상하며 지식과 가치, 문화를 구성하는 원리로 작동한다. 내 러티브 체험은 의사소통을 수행할 때 여러 판단의 과정을 배우는 인지적 정의적인 것들의 기초 가 된다는 것이다. 어떤 판단이나 규칙을 상황에 단순 적용하는 것이 아니라, 상황에 대한 현실 적 이해의 상상적 합리성으로 작용하기 때문이다. 따라서 내러티브 사고는 과거의 사건을 특정한 형태로 구조화하고 관련지으면서 서로 이질적으로 보이는 사건들을 종합하여 현실을 이해하려는 사고과정으로 작용한다. 이것은 학생들이 현장에서 겪게 되는 경험을 이야기하고, 다시 이야기하 는 과정을 통해 특정 행위의 경험의 의미를 찾고 이러한 과정은 실천지식의 토대가 되어 의사소 통 능력이 될 수 있다는 것이다. 내러티브를 통한 세계에 대한 이해 능력, 올바르게 인지하는 섬세 한 판별력, 경험을 이야기 형태로 구조화할 수 있는 능력, 사건들을 일관성 있게 맥락화하는 능력 등이 그것이다. 내러티브 교육은 의사소통 역량을 향상시키기 위한 기회와 체험을 경험하는 강력 한 학습도구로 활용할 수 있기에 기존의 의사소통 교육 방법을 보안하기 위한 방법으로 제시한다.
