So far, unification education has been done in a way that the important matters are set in advance and injected into the people. In the meantime, the current trend of demanding the change of the existing unification education such as the recognition difference between generations about unification, the increase of multicultural generation of South Korean society, and the progress of the 4th Industrial Revolution continues to appear. Therefore, it is necessary to introduce the communicative reason of Habermas, which accepts the diversity of truth instead of objective truth and acknowledges the open ending through conversation with others, into unification education. Methodologically, it is important to emphasize participation and consensus, to achieve emotional empathy based on the positive perception of unification, and to improve the practice to achieve unification. And the direction of unification education can be assumed as democratic civic education, open nationalism and international cooperation.

지금까지 통일교육은 국가에서 중요 사항을 미리 정해놓고 국민들에게 주입하는 형태로 이루어졌다. 그런데 통일에 대한 세대 간의 인식 차이, 남한 사회의 다문화 세대 증가, 제4차산업혁명의 진행 등 기존 통일교육의 변화를 요구하는 흐름이 계속 나타나고 있다. 따라서 객관적 진리 대신에 진리의 다양성을 수용하고 타자와의 대화를 통해 열린 결말을 인정하는 하버마스의 의사소통적 이성을 통일교육에 도입할 필요가 있다. 방법론적으로는 참여와 합의를 중시하고, 통일에 대한 긍정적 인식을 바탕으로 정서적 공감까지 이루어내며, 통일을 이루고자 하는 실천력을 향상시키도록 진행해야 할 것이다. 그리고 통일 교육의 방향은 민주시민교육, 열린 민족주의, 국제적 협력으로 상정할 수 있다.
