Last year marked a special time in Korea commemorating the 500th anniversary of Reformation. The Korean Protestant Church had a period of recollection and reflection. The 500th anniversary of Reformation is meaningful for Koreans and as a religious group of people. The Korean Protestant Church in particular, is facing stagnation and is declining in terms of the number of Sunday participants. One person to emphasize from the perspective of pastoral theology is Martin Bucer. He had been persistent in the Reformation at Strasbourg and influenced his reformational thought to John Calvin who was the founder of the Presbyterian Church. Bucer wrote the most important book in the ministry of pastoral theology, Concerning the true care of souls, in which he clearly manifests what pastoral ministry should be. He explains the five categories of sheep for which care of the souls are needed: 1) the lost sheep who do not believe Christ, 2) the stray and outcast sheep who have involved in the Christian life, but now have wandered off from it due to insinuating circumstances, 3) the wounded sheep, who while remaining in the fellowship of Christ, is internally hurt and reciprocate the sins within the Christian family, 4) the week and feeble sheep, who although they remain in the church and do not commit any notorious sins, is weak in faith and love in all the strength of the Christian life, and lastly 5) the strong sheep who is growing well and are stable in Christian life. Pastoral theology of Bucer sees the discipline essential for the wellbeing of the soul in the church. It is especially a necessary mechanism for the third category of sheep, the wounded, who come to Christ and for them to reconcile with Christ and with the Christian fellowship. He thinks the function of reconciling is essential for the care of such souls. His perspective of the care of the souls was to communicate with the statesmen during those times; however, it was unsuccessful, resulting him to change his original opinion regarding the discipline. Pastoral theology of Bucer has a big implication on the contemporary Korean Church. The people in the activity of the care of the souls intend to include all the people. Also Bucer had continuously been trying to mediate several different views of the reformers during those times, firmly standing in the ecumenical position. He emphasizes the community. Thus, he has concerns not only for the local churches, but also the society in which the minister’s conducts activities.

2017년은 종교개혁 500주년이 되어 개신교는 여러 가지 반성과 성찰의 시간을 많이 갖게 되었다. 종교개혁 500주년은 의미가 깊다. 왜냐하면, 한국 개신교회는 정체기를 지나 침체기에 들어가고 있다고 말하고 있다. 이러한 시점에서 특별히 목회신학적 관점에서 의미있게 살펴볼 인물이 마르틴 부처이다. 그는 스트라스부르크에서 종교개혁을 추진하였으며, 장로교의 창시자라 할 수 있는 존 칼빈에게 영향을 준 사람이다. 부처는 목회신학적으로 가장 중요한 책, 『영혼을 돌보는 참된 목회자』를 저술하였다. 그는 이 책을 통해서 목회자의 직무를 분명히 밝히고 있다. 곧, 하나님의 형상을 입었으나 그리스도를 믿지 않는 영혼들과, 교회에 나오다가 여러 가지 사정으로 믿음에서 멀어진 영혼들, 교회 안에 머물고 있으나 상처를 입고 죄를 지으며 다른 사람들에게 해를 끼치고 있는 영혼들, 교회 안에 머물러 신앙을 갖고 있으나 연약한 상태에 있는 영혼들, 마지막으로 건강한 영혼들, 이 모두를 목회자가 어떻게 인도하고 보살펴야 하는 지를 자세하게 주장하고 있다. 부처의 목회신학은 목회 훈련이 교회 안의 영혼들의 복리에 매우 중요하다고 본다. 특히 그는 목회훈련이 세 번째의 범주인 상처를 입은 영혼들에게 주 앞으로 나아와 그리스도와 교인들과의 교제를 회복시키는데 결정적으로 중요하다고 보았다. 영혼 돌봄에 있어 화해의 기능이 필요하다는 입장이다. 이러한 그의 목회 훈련관은 당시대의 정치가들과 대화하며 목회자의 고유의 역할로 자리잡게 하려고 노력했었으나, 종국에는 자신의 본래의 입장을 수정할 수밖에 없었다. 그의 목회신학은 현대의 한국개신교회에 시사하는 바가 크다. 영혼의 돌봄을 맡은 자는 모든 인간의 영혼을 주께로 돌아오게 하려는데 열심이어야 한다. 또한 부처는 여러 개신교 신학자들의 다른 견해를 중재하려고 애쓰며, 에큐메니칼한 입장을 견지하고 있었다. 그는 또한 공동체성을 강조하고 있었다. 곧, 그는 목회자는 교회 만을 대상으로 목회하는 것이 아니라, 사회도 목회자의 활동영역에 포함시키고 있다.
