This study focuses on a foreign case on innovation of a Liberal Arts Education Model in order to seek possibilities of Korean Liberal Arts Colleges. Nowadays is Liberal Arts Education one of the main issues facing the demographic cliff and the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Yale-NUS College in Singapore is a Liberal Arts College which pursues educational excellence and cultivates global leaders in the intelligent information society by integrating Eastern and Western values. This college is not only based on the traditional Liberal Arts Education of Yale University but also aims for a fully residence college in which student life and learning remain inseparable for four college years. It is also a model of combining majors on the basis of the well-defined common curriculum. This study demonstrates that the college takes root in the traditional Liberal Arts educational philosophy and encourages discussions between professors and students as participants of the learning community. In addition, it shows an academic structure similar to the medieval university which connected basic Liberal Arts Education with majors or vocational training. These features would be helpful and useful for planning and establishing future Korean Liberal Arts Colleges.

본 연구는 인구절벽과 4차 산업혁명의 전환기에 부쩍 활발해진 우리나라 고등교육 분 야에서의 리버럴아츠 교육 활성화 문제와 관련하여 외국의 혁신 사례를 발굴하여 한국 형 리버럴아츠 대학의 가능성을 탐색하는 데 그 목적이 있다. 싱가포르에 설립된 Yale-NUS College는 세계 유수대학의 교육 수월성 전략이자 동양과 서양의 가치를 접 목하여 다가올 지능정보사회를 선도할 글로벌 인재를 양성하려는 전형적인 리버럴아츠 대학이다. 이 대학은 예일대학의 오랜 교양교육 전통에 바탕을 두면서도, 대학 4년간을 생활과 학업이 하나로 연결된 정주형 대학(Residence College)을 지향하며, 탄탄한 공 통 교육과정의 지반 위에 전공(Major)을 결합하는 모범적 사례를 보여주고 있다. 이 대 학은 분명 오랜 전통의 리버럴아츠 교육철학에 굳건하게 뿌리를 두고, 교수와 학생이 하 나의 학습공동체 안에서 대화와 토론이 상시 이루어지고 있으며, 대학설립 초기와 유사 하게 리버럴아츠로 구성된 기초교육과 그 이후 전공교육이나 직업전문교육의 기반교육 을 유기적으로 연결하는 학사구조를 잘 보여주고 있어 추후 한국형 리버럴아츠 대학의 구상과 설립에도 적지 않은 시사점을 줄 것으로 보인다.
