This study examines Tokugawa Ieyasu, the historical figure who put an end to the Sengoku period and unified Japan, especially his ideas on education and their contemporary implications. According to this study, Ieyasu was an outstanding warrior, an innovative administrator with a challenging spirit and a brilliant teacher who had lead a model life that set an example to his descendants. He successfully achieved the unification of Japan by overcoming his personal difficulties through his extraordinary discipline, prudence and thorough self󰠏management. Moreover, the foundations that allowed the peaceful maintenance of the 260 years of the Edo period was due to his educational thoughts that emphasized reading, communication, virtue󰠏ruling, self󰠏 management and frugality, which he instilled into his children and descendants. Ieyasu’s will to overcome hardships, his self󰠏management and challenging spirit that this study has shown are important qualities for childhood education today.

본 연구는 일본의 전국시대를 종식시키고 일본을 통일한 도쿠가와 이에야스(德川家康)의 생애를 통해본 교육적 시사점에 대해 알아보는 연구이다. 본 연구에 의하면 이에야스는 걸출한 무장이었고, 도전정신을 갖춘 혁신적 행정가였으며 자손들에게는 삶의 표본을 보여준 뛰어난 교육자였다. 그의 뛰어난 절제력과신중함 그리고 철저한 자기관리와 인간관리 능력은 개인적 시련의 극복을 넘어서 일본 통일의 위업을 달성할 수 있었다. 또한, 그가 자녀들과 후손들에게 가르친 독서중시, 덕치중시, 소통중시, 자기관리와 근검정신 등의 교육관은 에도막부를 260년간 평화스럽게 유지시킬 수 있는 근간이 되었다. 일본 전국시대 인물의 교육관을 현대에 그대로 접목시키는 것은 무리가 있겠지만, 본 연구에서보여준 이에야스의 고난극복의 의지, 자기관리 그리고 도전정신 등은 오늘날 우리의 자녀교육을 위해 숙고할 필요가 있다고 여겨진다.
