The purpose of this study is to investigate the educational value of a teaching program on the theme of an independence movement. To communicate the significance of the independence movement and aid the process of internalization among learners, this study focused on a experiential program and examined the implications of the educational program for the participants’ learning experience. The study involved a case analysis on an educational program titled “Pathway to Independence for Youth” on the theme of the independence movement in the Andong area. The program was conducted once a week for two hours over a span of four weeks. The participants of the program were 25 local youth. Data were collected via observation, in-depth interviews with three participants, and previous literature review prior to the content analysis. The study analysis showed that education on the independence movement has the following implications. First, it can become a window to wisdom for life. Second, it can exert a positive influence on character development. Third, it can help participants establish a sense of identity as members of the local society. Thus, learning about the independence movement can be seen as a social movement as well as a form of social networking itself.

본 연구의 목적은 학습자에게 독립운동의 의미 전달과 내면화를 돕는 교육방법으로 체험교육에 주목하고, 독립운동을 주제로 한 체험교육프로그램 학습자의 참여 경험을 통해 교육프로그램이 학습자에게 미치는 영향을 살펴보는데 있다. 본 연구는 안동 지역의 독립운동을 주제로 한 교육프로그램 ‘청년이라면 독립의 길’을 사례연구 하였다. 프로그램은 4주간 주1회 2시간씩 운영되었으며, 총 25명의 지역 청년이 참여하였다. 참여관찰, 참여자 3명과의 심층면담, 문서자료를 수집하여 내용을 분석하였다. 연구결과 교육프로그램에서 학습자의 주체적 역할 수행과 참여자간 상호작용은 독립운동에 대한 이해를 돕는다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 이때 독립운동교육은 학습자에게 첫째, 삶의 지혜를 얻는 창구 역할을 하고, 둘째, 인성 함양에 긍정적 영향을 주며, 셋째, 지역구성원으로서의 정체성 확립을 돕는다는 것을 확인하였다. 이런 면에서 독립운동에 대해 배우는 행위는 그 자체가 하나의 사회적 움직임이자 사회적 연대로 볼 수 있을 것이다.
